Toledo, OH -- The National Junior College Athletic Association Academic All-American teams were announced on Tuesday May 29 for the 2017-2018 scholastic year, and the Owens Women's Volleyball and Women's Basketball program each placed team members amongst the recipients.

The Express Volleyball team had three of its member named to one of the Academic All-American teams. Sophomores Devon Heitkamp and Erika Angstmann were both named to the Academic All-American First Team. Freshman Cassidy Wlodarz was named as a member of the Academic All-American Third Team.

For Heitkamp and Angstmann, this is the second year in a row that each of them has been named to the Academic All-American First Team. For Angstmann, it is her second All-American nomination as well for the season. She was named to the Second Team All-American squad for her play on the court during the season as well. The three award winners raise coach Sonny Lewis's total to 27 Academic All-Americans that he has coached during his tenure at Owens.

For women's basketball, the Express had one member named to the Academic All-American First team and that was sophomore Olivia Frost. Frost is the first member from the women's basketball program to be named to the First Team since Mikayla Ward during the 2015-2016 season.

To be named to the First Team, a student-athlete must maintain a grade point average of 4.0. To be named to the Second Team, a student-athlete must carry a grade point average between 3.8 and 3.99. Finally to be named to the Third Team, a student athlete's grade point average needs to be between a 3.6 and a 3.79.
