Notebook: Reese earns national honor in women's hoops

A former Tyger earned a national award recently.

Jeryn Reese, a freshman women's basketball player at Owens Community College in Toledo, was recently named National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Player of the Week.

Reese led the 11th-ranked Express by averaging 20 points and 20 rebounds over the two games played that week. Owens beat Lorain County Community College 116-50, as Reese finished with 24 points and 21 rebounds, one short of the program's record. In a 91-62 win over Columbus State, she had 16 points and 19 rebounds.

In 18 games, Reese is averaging 10.8 points and 10.1 rebounds as Owens is 13-6 overall and 5-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Association. She leads the league in rebounding, plus is second in steals, sixth in blocks and sixth in scoring.

Also playing for Owens is MeKaila Grose, a freshman forward from Madison. She's made three starts in 18 games and is averaging 4.2 points and four rebounds on 42 percent shooting. Grose scored a career-high 11 points against Columbus State.

Anna Hintz

The 6-2 freshman forward from South Central is making an impact at the University of Findlay (11-4, 6-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). She is averaging 19.6 minutes off the bench where she leads the Oilers in rebounds at 6.1 per game, plus adds 6.5 points. She's shooting 46 percent from the field and 65 percent from the foul line.

Sheerer and Whitaker

The Bluffton women's basketball team won its first 14 games of the season and is 7-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference led by a pair of north central Ohioans.

Macey Sheerer, a 5-6 sophomore guard from Bucyrus, paces the Beavers with 13.2 points and 7.7 rebounds with two assists in 28.6 minutes a night. She's shooting 62 percent from the field and 81 percent from the foul line.

Senior 5-4 guard Taylor Whitaker of Lexington is a starter who is averaging 8.9 points in 24.6 minutes.

Austin Rohde

The Bluffton men are 8-6, 3-4, as Shelby's Austin Rohde is a major contributor. The 5-10 guard has started all 14 games and is averaging 15.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and three assists, while shooting 51 percent overall, 50 percent from the arc and 72 percent from the foul line.

Mitchel Huffman is a 5-8 senior guard from Hillsdale who has played in six games for the Beavers.

Allie Hawkins

The senior from Bucyrus is a 5-7 guard at Heidelberg where she has started 12 games. She is averaging 6.9 points and 1.9 rebound with 2.4 assists for the team (6-9, 4-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference).

Alissa Munro

The Lexington senior is a 5-8 forward at Baldwin-Wallace. Twice in the last three games she's scored 11 points off the bench. For the season, she is averaging 2.8 points on 43 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from the arc in 7.1 minutes per night for the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 5-2 OAC). Hunter Feltner, a 6-0 freshman forward from Willard, has appeared in three games for B-W.
