Tibbs, Tunstall to join BGSU program for 2015-16 season

Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Jennifer Roos has announced the addition of two student-athletes. A pair of transfers, Lauren Tibbs and Ashley Tunstall, will join the Falcon program.

Tibbs comes to BGSU from Marquette University, while Tunstall joins the Falcons from Owens Community College. Both will be immediately eligible to play in the 2015-16 season. Tibbs has one season of eligibility remaining and Tunstall two.

"I couldn't be more excited to add Lauren and Ashley to our program," said Roos, who enters her fourth season as head coach. "Each of these young women fit what we are looking for as players, as students and as people. They will be valuable additions to the Falcon Family."

Tibbs, a 6-4 center, is a native of Taylor Mill, Ky. (Scott H.S.). She spent four years at Marquette, earning her undergraduate degree last month. Tibbs, who will pursue a master's degree at BGSU, played in a total of 93 games with the Golden Eagles, with 393 points, 330 rebounds, 56 assists and 44 blocked shots during that time.

She played in all 30 of the Golden Eagles' games in 2014-15, making three starts. She shot better than 50 percent (50.5%) from the field, going 47-of-93 from the floor en route to an average of 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Her highlights from last season included a 15-rebound game vs. South Dakota, and a 14-point, 14-rebound contest vs. Loyola.

Tibbs made over half of her field-goal attempts in each of her three seasons with the Golden Eagles. She played in just one game as a true freshman in 2011-12, before suffering an injury, but returned to average 5.6 points and 3.5 boards while shooting 59.1% from the floor the following season. Two years ago, Tibbs made 52.7% of her field-goal tries, and averaged 3.4 ppg and 3.5 rpg.  The Golden Eagles went 22-11 and advanced to the second round of the WNIT in 2013-14, after winning 16 games and making a trip to the WNIT the previous year.

Tibbs left Scott H.S. as the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, with 2,752 points and 1.403 rebounds. A two-time Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Player of the Year, she averaged 24 points and 11 boards as a senior, and also set the school's records for points (48) and rebounds (22) in a game. She was ranked the 25th-best center and 146th-best overall player in the nation by Dan Olson's Collegiate Girls Basketball Report while in high school. A standout volleyball player as well, she became just the second player in school history to record over 1,000 career kills.

"I have known Lauren and her family since she was a junior at Scott High School in Northern Kentucky," said Roos. "She was extremely successful at Marquette as a student-athlete, and will quickly adapt to our system. Lauren has been surrounded by many great coaching mentors and has gained valuable experience as an undergraduate. She will excel as an ambassador of our program."

Tunstall, a 5-10 forward, comes to BGSU after two successful seasons at nearby Owens CC. She averaged 14.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game last year, helping the Express to the best season in program history. Owens posted a 34-2 overall record and a perfect 14-0 mark in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play, the program's first-ever undefeated conference season. The Express finished third in the country in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Tournament. Along the way, the team captured a school-record 33 straight wins. The program's OCCAC championship was the third in as many years for the Express, who also won the Region XII District I crown.

In 2014-15, Tunstall had 514 points – the 12th-highest single-season total in program history – along with 338 boards, 83 assists, 88 steals and 17 blocks, and she earned First-Team All-OCCAC, First-Team All-Region XII and WBCA Honorable-Mention All-America accolades. She shot 55.1% from the field and 70.3% from the stripe and posted 15 double-doubles, including four in the team's six postseason games.

Tunstall averaged 23.8 points and 10.3 boards per game in postseason play last year, was named the Region XII District I Tournament MVP and made the NJCAA Division II All-National Tournament Team. Tunstall had 31 points in the Region XII District I championship game, and scored 33 in a national quarterfinal-round win – the two highest-scoring games of her career. She was named the school's female Athlete of the Year in '14-15.

In her first season at Owens, Tunstall became the program's first freshman in four years to be named to the All-OCCAC First Team. She averaged 11.1 points and nine rebounds in her initial campaign, including 14.8 ppg and 9.3 rpg in conference play. She averaged 12.9 points and 9.2 rebounds in her Owens career, with totals of 837 points (10th-most in program history), 600 rebounds, 113 assists, 137 steals and 22 blocks. She had 26 double-doubles in 65 career games, and the Express won 60 of those 65 games.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Tunstall attended Springfield H.S. through her junior year before transferring to Huber Heights Wayne H.S. She has played AAU ball for the Dayton Lady Hoopstars.

"Ashley has made an impact regionally at Owens Community College, as well as on the national level by competing in two consecutive national tournaments," said Roos. "She has the desire and drive to be successful academically and athletically at the Division I level.  We have followed her successes over the last two years, and I am very excited she will be wearing Orange and Brown to finish her collegiate career."

Roos and the Falcons had three seniors – Erica Fullenkamp, Deborah Hoekstra and Jasmine Matthews – on the 2014-15 roster. Fullenkamp, a BGSU volleyball standout, was added to the women's basketball roster in January, after no fewer than four players had been lost to season-ending injuries by that time. A fifth player, Matthews, was limited to just 35 minutes during the entirety of the MAC schedule.

Ten of the 13 players that suited up for the Brown and Orange in 2014-15 have at least one year of eligibility remaining, as the roster included four true freshmen, two redshirt frosh, two sophomores, two juniors and the three seniors. Additionally, three student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent in November and will come to BG this summer. That trio includes Maddie Cole (Sylvania, Ohio), Sydney Lambert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Carly Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio).
