Smith played for the state championship team at Columbus East as a senior in high school. In 1968-69, he played for William and Mary College before transferring to play for Penta Tech in 1969-70.

1969-70 Highlights

- Scored 21 points in a 75-73 win over Wilberforce
- Scored 14 points in a  97-78 win over Franklin University
- Scored 10 points in a 77-71 loss to Davenport 
- Scored 20 points in a 90-84 season-ending loss to Lorain County, which was the program's final game as Penta Tech
