Trio Leads No. 17 Owens Past Lorain County 100-85

Elyria, Ohio---The trio of John Murry (North Central/Indianapolis, Ind.), Pete Firlik (Catholic Central/Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Kenny Jones (Clay/South Bend, Ind.) led the No. 17 Owens Community College men's basketball team past Lorain County Community College 100-85 on the road tonight.

Murry led all scorers with 25 points on 8-for-14 shooting, while tying for a game-high in assists with five. Firlik finished 7-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range, for 21 points. He added five steals. Jones added 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals, and he finished 8-for-13 from the field.

The trio combined to shoot 23-for-36 from the field, including 6-for-12 from 3-point range. Additionally, they went 14-for-17 from the foul line. 

Justin Baker (Cathedral/Indianapolis, Ind.) also had five assists, while Firlik's steal total was a game-high.

As a team, Owens finished 35-for-63 (55.6 percent) from the field (7-for-20 from 3-point range) and 23-for-29 from the foul line.

The game itself saw each team battle back and forth until late in the first half when Owens started to pull away, eventually taking a 44-29 lead into the break. In the second half, Lorain County's 3-point shooting kept the game reasonably close, but Owens never led by fewer than 10 points.

For Lorain County, Zach Barens (20), Brandon Lawler (20) and Wesley Harris (19) led the way in scoring. Kevin Jenkins (9) and Barens (7) led the team in rebounds. Jenkins and Lawler each added five assists.

Lorain County finished 12-for-28 from 3-point range in the game. They are now 11-10 overall and 2-5 in OCCAC play.

With the win, Owens improves to 17-5 overall and 5-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. They have now won six of their past seven games. They will travel to Cincinnati State Technical and Community College for a 3 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

Today's game marked the second consecutive game and 10th overall this year in which Owens has scored at least 100 points.
