Lansing, Mich.---Javon Haines scored 45 points to help the No. 9 Lansing Community College men's basketball team pull out a 108-104 win over No. 16 Owens Community College this afternoon.

Haines finished 15-for-29 from the field and 15-for-16 from the foul line as the two teams combined to shoot 78-for-156 from the field in the high scoring affair.

Owens was led by freshman guard Tariq Scott (R.J. Reynolds/Winston Salem, N.C.), who had a team-high 19 points, along with four assists. Three other freshmen also produced well in their first collegiate games as Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) had 17, Charles Penn III (Macomb Dakota/Detroit, Mich.) had 16 and Xavier Cochran (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) had 15.

Turnovers hindered the Owens effort as they had 16 compared to just eight for Lansing. At the same time, however, they shot 10-for-25 from 3-point range compared to just 6-for-24 for Lansing.

Aside from Haines, Lansing got 20 points from Brian Morton, 19 from Jimmy Kodet and 12 from Isaiah Green, who also led all players with eight rebounds.

Lansing finished 51.2 percent from the field, while Owens had a 48.7 percent total.

Owens (0-1) will host its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Lansing Community College.
