Cochran's Scoring Outburst Leads Owens Men To Weekend Split

Jamestown, N.Y.---Xavier Cochran (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) averaged 26 points as the Owens Community College men's basketball team split a pair of games in the Post Journal Classic at Jamestown Community College this weekend.

Game 1: Owens d. Jamestown - Cattaraugus Campus 99-73

On Saturday, Owens exploded for a 63 point second half to pick up a 99-73 win over Jamestown - Cattaraugus.

Down 39-36 at halftime, Owens finished 25-for-39 (64.1 percent) from the field in the second half, including an 11-for-18 finish from 3-point range. Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) led the way with 15 points in the half, while Cochran added 13.

Dilyn Good (Springfield/Holland, Ohio), who had 14 points and seven rebounds in the first half, gave Owens a 13-12 lead with 11:04 left in the half. Jamestown - Cattaraugus answered with an 11-0 run, and later lead by 11 with 4:58 left in the half.

Brian Walker (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) responded on the next possession by starting a 14-3 run over the next 2:56 to tie it at 34. The teams traded baskets after that before William Moore's jumper gave his team a three point lead at the break.

Cochran and Ty'Rese Searles (Cornerstone/Pontiace, Mich.) opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers as Owens took the lead back in the first minute. 

With 10:53 left, Jamestown - Cattaraugus trailed by seven, but Owens went on a 27-9 run to open up a 93-68 lead with 3:19 left. La'Tre Lane (Marshall Public/Albion, Mich.) capped the run with a jumper.

Jamerson Jr. led Owens in scoring with 22 points, while adding five assists. He finished 7-for-11 from 3-point range. Cochran and Good each added 18 points, and Good chipped in 12 rebounds. Searles also reached double figures in scoring with 14.

Roy Hatchett Jr. (Glenville/Cleveland, Ohio) led Owens with six assists, while Searles and Tariq Scott (R.J. Reynolds/Winston Salem, N.C.) each had five, as well.

Owens finished 15-for-31 (48.4 percent) from 3-point range.

For Jamestown - Cattaraugus (7-5), Moore had 18, Chucky Martin had 16, Deonn Moore-Colomb had 13 and Rob Sanders had 12.

Game 2: Jamestown d. Owens 104-91

Cochran poured in a season-high 34 points, but Owens couldn't overcome a 37 point first half in a loss on Sunday.

Jamestown led early by scoring the first six and 15 of the game's first 18 points. A jumper from Searles trimmed the deficit to seven with 12:32 left in the half, but Jamestown opened up a 45-21 lead with 5:55 remaining.

Good and Hatchett Jr. responded with a pair of jumpers to to trim the deficit to 16 over the next 3:10. Searles pulled Owens within 13 in the final 20 seconds, but Michael Bush responded with a 3-pointer to give Jamestown a 53-37 lead at halftime.

Jamestown gradually increased its lead in the second half and held a 22 point margin with 8:32 left. Down the stretch, Owens couldn't seem to close the gap enough and dropped it second game of the season to Jamestown.

While Cochran dropped 34 points on 12-for-20 shooting, Searles poured in 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Jamerson Jr. chipped in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Searles led the team with five assists.

Samuel Joseph led Jamestown with 26 points. Kyle Taylor-Mcleggan added 20, Rakim Lesane had 18, Michael Bush had 16 and Ryan Chung had 15. 

Jamestown (11-2) reached 100 or more points for the seventh time this season. They defeated Owens 90-86 earlier this year.

Looking Ahead

Owens is now 5-8 overall this year as they enter conference play next week with a 6:30 p.m. road tilt at Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday.

The next four games are on the road for Owens. They will return home on Jan. 9 against Columbus State Community College.

Notes

Cochran now leads the team with 15.1 points per game. Jamerson Jr. comes in second with 14.4. Searles (12.5) and Charles Penn III (Macomb Dakota/Detroit, Mich. (10.8) are also averaging double figures.
