Toledo, Ohio---The Owens Community College men's basketball team never seemed to get things going offensively in a season-ending 73-53 loss to Cuyahoga Community College in a Region XII District 11 quarterfinal in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) tonight.

Owens shot 14-for-50 (28 percent) from the field, 5-for-26 (19.2 percent) from 3-point range and 20-for-29 (69 percent) while scoring a school record low 53 points. Furthermore, they were out-rebounded 48-30 overall and 20-11 on the offensive glass.

For Owens offensively, Charles Penn III (Macomb Dakota/Detroit, Mich.) had a team-high 13 points, along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. The next two closest in scoring were Xavier Cochran (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Dae'Shawn Jackson (Springfield/Springfield, Ohio) with seven points apiece, while Cochran tied Penn III for the team-high in rebounds with eight.

Cuyahoga (18-13) was led by Rico Jones Jr., who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Isiah McQueen added 14 points off the bench, while Kash Blackwell had 14 points and seven rebounds out of the starting lineup. Austin Daniels was the fourth and final Cuyahoga player in double figures with 10. Jones Jr. and Daniels each had four assists to lead the team.

The game itself saw Cuyahoga lead from start to finish. They scored the game's first five points. Owens then pulled within one point on three occassions over the next few minutes, but Cuyahoga took a 39-30 lead into the break.

In the second half, Owens was able to pull within as close as three with 14:53 left following a jumper from Penn III, but Cuyahoga scored the next six points, capped by a jumper from Jones Jr. to put the margin back to what it was at halftime with 11:32 left.

Jamerson Jr. answered with a pair of free throws, but Cuyahoga went on an 10-2 run and led 57-42 with 8:40 left. Following that, Owens got as close as 11, while Cuyahoga led by as many as 22 with 1:31 left.

Owens finishes the season 18-13 overall, while Cuyahoga advances to the Region XII District 11 semifinals to take on No. 1 seed Sinclair Community College, who clobbered No. 8 seed Clark State Community College 115-62 in another quarterfinal tonight.

Notes

Jamerson Jr. finishes the season 103-for-249 from 3-point range, which put him just short of the made and attempts record in a season. Jeff Massey (1991-92) had 112 made 3-point field goals, while Justin Edmonds (2011-12) had 262 3-point field goal attempts.

The 18 wins for Owens is the fewest since 2010-11, and they had their streak of back-to-back conference championships snapped. Furthermore, the team had its streak of four consecutive seasons of reaching the Region XII District 11 championship game snapped.

Tonight's 53 point game marked the fewest points scored in school history. The previous mark of 57 occurred vs Macomb Community College on March 2, 1995 and against Lorain County Community College in 1978-79.
