Owens MBB Tops Lakeland 103-53, Wins 6th Straight As Jamerson Breaks Two Records

Kirtland, Ohio---Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) etched his name into the record book as the Owens Community College men's basketball team routed Lakeland Community College 103-53 on the road tonight.

In doing so, Owens has won six straight and is now 15-5 overall and 6-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play entering Saturday's big road tilt at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College (15-5 overall, 6-0 OCCAC). Lakeland fell to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in OCCAC play with the loss.

Jamerson, meanwhile, finished 9-for-17 from the field, including a 7-for-13 mark from 3-point range, and finished with game-highs in points (25) and rebounds (11), while adding four assists, two steals and one block.

The sophomore guard, who has signed with NCAA Division I Norfolk State University, is now 173-for-394 (43.9 percent) from 3-point range in his career, which gives him both the career 3-point field goals made and attempted records. Tonight, he passed Jeff Massey (172, 1991-93) for the made record, and he passed Andy Bachman (389, 2012-14) for the attempts record.

In addition to that, Jamerson picked up his fifth double-double of the season tonight, and he produced all of his points in the first half.

As a team, Owens finished 16-for-35 (45.7 percent) from 3-point range tonight. All but two players made at least one 3-pointer, while they finished 40-for-70 (57.1 percent) from the field.

Marquevious Wilson (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) finished second on the team in scoring with 18 points, along with three assists, while Rico Stafford (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) added 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists.

Mason Durden (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio), who made his first start of the season tonight, finished just one point shy of his season-high in scoring with 12, while adding five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jamiri Bennett (Maumee/Toledo, Ohio) chipped in 11 points for his second double digit scoring game of the season.

Roy Hatchett Jr. (Glenville/Cleveland, Ohio), who had a game-high 10 assists, and Ty'Rese Searles (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) each added 10 points as Owens had seven players score in double figures. Derek Reece Jr. (Springfield/Holland, Ohio) pulled down eight rebounds off the bench, too.

Owens got baskets from five different players as it opened the game on an 11-0 run over the first 2:44. From there, they slowly tacked onto the lead. Jamerson buried one of his seven first half 3-pointers with 6:10 left for a 36-14 lead.

Then, after Lakeland's Trevon Granger scored four straight to pull his team within 21 with 5:11 left, Owens went on a 15-2 run - capped by a dunk from Reece and a 3-pointer from Jamerson, who then closed the half with a jumper to give his team a 56-22 lead.

Owens opened the second half on a 14-1 run that featured six points from Hatchett and four points apiece from Wilson and Durden. Wilson's 3-pointer with 13:26 left gave Owens a 50-point lead.

Stafford joined in on the fun from long distance with his first 3-pointer of the season with 10:20 left that put Owens up 92-37. From there, Lakeland outscored Owens 16-11 as play slowed down.

Jeff Nevulis led Lakeland with 17 points, while Da'ron Falkner had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Granger chipped in 12 points to give them three double digit scorers. Defensively, Lakeland has now given up 100 or more points in four straight games and in five of its past six.
