Toledo, Ohio---Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) further cemented himself as one of the best 3-point shooters in program history as the Owens Community College men's basketball team routed Hocking College 127-74 in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) today.
The sophomore, who has signed with NCAA Division I Norfolk State University, entered today already holding the program records for 3-point field goals made and attempted in a career. Today, he scored a career-high 40 points on 12-for-18 shooting from 3-point range, including 8-for-12 in the second half alone, to break the program's single game records for most made 3-point field goals and attempted 3-point field goals.
On top of that, Jamerson eclipsed 800 career points and helped the team tie the program's single game record of 22 made 3-point field goals.
After outscoring Hocking 37-18 over the final 10 minutes of the first half, Owens saw Hocking outscore them 22-11 over the first seven plus minutes of the second half.
Then, Jamerson happened. Over a two minute and 14 second stretch, he buried 5-for-5 from 3-point range. Roy Hatchett Jr. (Glenville/Cleveland, Ohio) also made a 3-pointer in the middle of the run as Owens took a 92-54 lead.
Over the next two minutes, Jamerson added another 3-pointer, and Owens also got 3-pointers from Hatchett, Shondell Jackson (Warren Harding/Warren, Ohio) and Marquevious Wilson (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) to open up a 106-58 lead.
Following a pair of free throws from Jamerson following a technical foul, Rico Stafford (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) rammed his way down the lane for a dunk to give Owens 110 points. With 1:03 left, Jamerson hit his 12th 3-pointer to give him 40 points. At that point, head coach Dennis Springs removed Jamerson to a loud ovation.
In the second half alone, Owens shot 22-for-36 from the field, including a 14-for-22 finish from 3-point range.
In addition to his 40 points, Jamerson added eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in 33 minutes. He finished 13-for-21 from the field overall. Stafford finished second on the team in scoring with a season-high 25 points along with six rebounds, six steals, five assists and two blocks.
Jamiri Bennett (Maumee/Toledo, Ohio) joined in on the action with season-highs in points (21), rebounds (7) and assists (5), while also grabbing three steals. He went 8-for-11 from the field (3-for-5 from 3-point range) and 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Hatchett chipped in his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 assists, while Wilson added 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
In addition to those five, Jackson had eight points, James Grays (Start/Toledo, Ohio) had seven points and six rebounds, and Mason Durden (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) had five points and four assists.
Hocking was led by 20 points from Bryce Mooring, while Raysean Jones (16), D'Andre Clay (14) and Keiron Morning (10) also reached double figures.
Owens is now 16-7 overall heading into Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. road matchup at Lorain County Community College. The team next plays at home on Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. in the SHAC.
NOTES
The previous record for most 3-pointers made in one game was held by Chris Trobaugh, who made 8-for-8 against Ohio State University's club team on Dec. 17, 2005. Trobaugh still holds the single game 3-point field goal percentage record from his performance in that game.
The previous mark for 3-pointers attempted in one game was 16, which was set by Jamerson against Kalamazoo Valley on Nov. 18 of this season.
The 22 made 3-pointers by the team tied the mark set last year on Feb. 20, 2016 against Clark State.
Today's 127-point effort was a season-high in scoring for Owens, and it was just six shy of the program's single game record. They now have five 100-point or more games this year.
