Owens MBB Pulls Out 92-87 Come-From-Behind Road Win Over Lorain County

Elyria, Ohio---The trio of Marquevious Wilson (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio), Derrik Jamerson Jr. (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) and Rico Stafford (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) combined for 65 points to lead the Owens Community College men's basketball team to a 92-87 win over Lorain County Community College on the road Wednesday.

With the win, Owens is now 17-7 overall and 7-3 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play entering Saturday's 3 p.m. home tilt against Sinclair Community College. Lorain County fell to 14-8 overall and 6-6 in OCCAC play with the loss.

Wilson scored a season-high 23 points and produced his first career double-double with 11 rebounds. He also added two assists and two steals. Jamerson continued his hot shooting by making 6-for-12 from 3-point range and totaling 22 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. He is now 18-for-30 from 3-point range over his past two games.

Stafford, meanwhile, had 20 points, five rebounds and two steals. Overall, the trio combined to finish 26-for-41 from the field, while Jamerson and Wilson went 10-for-18 from 3-point range.

Aside from those three, James Grays (Start/Toledo, Ohio) chipped in 10 points, while Roy Hatchett Jr. (Glenville/Cleveland, Ohio) had five points and 12 assists. It was Hatchett's eighth double digit assist game of the season.

Jamerson opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer, but Lorain County led for a large portion of the game behind the play of TJ Steele (23 points) and Jarred Schultz (24 points and 10 rebounds).

The first five minutes saw the two teams exchange leads, and Stafford threw down one of several highlight reel dunks to give Owens a 13-10 lead with 15:16 left. Two minutes later, Hatchett buried a 3-pointer following an offensive rebound from Stafford to push the lead to four.

The combination of Steele and Schultz then scored seven straight points to give their team the lead. Following a timeout, Shondell Jackson (Warren Harding/Warren, Ohio) found Grays for a layup, but Lorain County scored the game's next four points to take a 25-20 lead midway through the half.

Mason Durden (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) responded with a jumper, and Stafford followed with a steal and fast break dunk to start a 6-0 run, but Lorain County answered by scoring 10 of the next 13 points to open up a 35-29 lead with 5:41 left.

Wilson hit a pair of 3-pointers to pull Owens within two a minute later, and Ty'Rese Searles (Cornerstone/Pontiac, Mich.) hit one of two at the foul line to knot the game at 39 apiece with 1:39 left. Lorain County scored the next five points before Jamerson closed the half with a 3-pointer as Owens trailed 44-42 at the break.

Lorain County remained ahead for the first six minutes of the second half and eventually pushed its lead to nine with 13:59 left.

Wilson and Searles responded with back-to-back 3-pointers. Searles then found Wilson for a pair of layups off outlet passes to complete a 10-0 run and give Owens a 60-59 lead.

Lorain County quickly took the lead back, and they stayed in command over the next four minutes until Wilson grabbed a steal and went in for a fast break layup to give Owens a 70-69 lead with 8:07 left.

Another 3-pointer from Jamerson pushed the lead to four, but a quick 4-0 run from Lorain County knotted things up at 73 apiece with 6:45 left.

From that point on, though, Owens took control and never trailed again. Jamerson hit a pair of 3-pointers and Jackson hit a jump shot to make it 81-77. Following a 3-pointer from Lorain County's Schultz, Stafford hammered home another dunk and scored the game's next six points to give Owens an 87-80 lead with 2:25 left.

Lorain County pulled as close as four following Kyle Fayne's three-point play, but Hatchett found a lane and converted a layup. Wilson followed with three free throws to seal the game before Schultz hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. 

Owens finished 35-for-67 (52.2 percent) from the field, including a 12-for-26 (46.2 percent) mark from 3-point range. Lorain County also shot well from 3-point range and went 11-for-26 (42.3 percent) from 3-point range.

Jamerson is now 92-for-185 from 3-point range this year, which moves him closer to both single season records. Jeff Massey (1991-92) holds the record for most makes with 112, while Justin Edmonds (2011-12) holds the record for most attempts with 262.
