High School: 2008 Carey High School graduate, Carey, Ohio, where he earned Second Team and Honorable Mention All-Midland Athletic League and Honorable Mention All-District honors.  An honors student, Schmitz also participated in the Ohio High School District Tournament and was named team MVP.
