Perrysburg, Ohio---Harrison Long (Wilnecote/Tamworth, U.K.) and Philippe Weppernig (Luzern, Switzerland) teamed up to win two individual championships as the No. 3 Owens Community College men's golf team captured their second straight Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Ryder Cup championship today.
Long and Weppernig won the Alternate Shot and Scramble events, although they had to win a playoff to capture the Scramble. In the Best Ball competition, Matt Nickoson and Austin Kyle came out with the low score after winning a playoff.
Each competition consisted of nine holes. The winning nine hole scores in each event were: Alternate Shot (21), Scramble (22) and Best Ball (22). Both the Scramble and Best Ball went to playoffs.
In the Best Ball category, Long and Weppernig tied teammates Tyler Crossley (Jonathan Alder/Plain City, Ohio) and Brandon Hoelzer (Fremont Ross/Fremont, Ohio) with a team-low 23. The duo of Dru Hein (Jasper/Jasper, Ind.) and Kirby Manown (Belle Vernon/Belle Vernon/Penn.) shot a 24.
In the Alternate Shot category, Long and Weppernig's 21 led the way, while Hein/Manown shot a 25 and Crossley/Hoezler shot a 26.
In the Scramble category, Long/Weppernig had a team-low of 22, while Manown/Hein and Crossley/Hoelzer each shot a 23.
Adding up the top two scores and dropping the low score in each category, the Express shot a 137 to capture their second straight OCCAC Ryder Cup championship, which is in its second year of existence.
Columbus State Community College finished second with a 140, while Cincinnati State Technical and Community College's 145 got them third place. Lorain County Community College and Lakeland Community College finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Wrap Up
Today's Ryder Cup championship gives the Express men's golf team back-to-back titles in the OCCAC, the Ryder Cup and the Sub-Region XII tournament. They will look to defend their Region XII tournament championship next Monday and Tuesday. Should they do so, they would advance to their second straight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament.
