Hammond, Ind.---The Owens Community College men's golf team shot a 304 in the first round of the Mike Lalaeff Memorial Invite at Lost Marsh Golf Course today and sit four strokes back of first place Carthage College.
"The weather was terrible," Owens head men's golf coach Josh Williams said. "Plus, this is the hardest course we will play all year."
He added that the first hole has an island green that sits in a marsh off of Lake Michigan.
Sophomore Harrison Long (Wilnecote/Tamworth, U.K.) is the tournament's individual leader with a 71, which is two strokes ahead of Carthage College's Alex Rendon. Dominic DiGiacomo (Ocean City/Ocean City, N.J.) shot a 73, Philippe Weppernig (Luzern, Switzerland) shot a 79, Wyatt Spalding (Summerfield/Petersburg, Mich.) shot an 81 and Christian Bienaime (Lake Brantly/Altamonte Springs, Fla.) shot an 82.
Augustana College shot a 313 and is in third place. The final round of the tournament is tomorrow.
Owens is shorthanded in the Lalaeff Invite as sophomore Dru Hein (Jasper/Jasper, Ind.) was unable to make the trip.
Notes
Owens played in the Lalaeff Memorial last fall on the same course and shot a 317 in the first round, so they've improved that score by 13 strokes. The team ended up shooting a 309 on the second day and finishing in third place. They are the only two-year school in the tournament - in either year.
