Hat Tricks Galore As Owens Wins Most Lopsided Game In Program History Over Lorain County 17-0

Toledo, Ohio---Austin Combs (Anthony Wayne/Maumee, Ohio) led the Owens Community College men's soccer team to a 17-0 win over Lorain County Community College today in the most lopsided game in program history.

Combs tallied two goals and three assists, while three others tallied hat tricks including: Matt Almester (St. John's Jesuit/Toledo, Ohio), Alejandro Salinaz (Crestwood/Dearborn Heights, Mich.) and Josiah McCloud (Monclova Christian/Toledo, Ohio).

Almester, who also had one assist, scored the team's first goal of the season 1:52 into the game on a cross from Bjion Campbell (Coconut Creek/Margate, Fla.). Joseph Adby (York College/York, North Yorkshire, England) then scored his first career goal on a header at the 5:57 mark off a corner kick from Ahmad Jarrar (Hendersonville/Hendersonville, N.C.) to make it 2-0.

In the eighth minute, Combs and Campbell scored, with the goal by Combs coming off another assist from Jarrar. Almester, Jarrar and Salinaz each followed with goals and Owens was up 7-0 just 23 minutes into the game. McCloud tallied back-to-back goals to finish off a nine-goal first half.

Similar to the first half, Almester opened the second frame with a goal - this time off an assist from Combs. Jarrar, Combs and Salinaz, respectively, scored in the first 18 minutes of the half to put Owens up 13-0 and break the old program record of 12 for goals in a game.

Samuel Miller (Northview/Toledo, Ohio) joined Adby as one of two sophomores to score their first career goal in the 82nd minute, and he was followed by goals from Salinaz, Reiss Liggitt (Seminole/Birmingham, England) and McCloud to close out the game.

In all, a program record nine different players scored for Owens. Aside from the three hat tricks and the effort of Combs, Jarrar totaled two goals and two assists. Additionally, aside from their three goals apiece, Almester and McCloud each added one assist.

Talal Farhan (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio) started in goal for Owens. He saved one shot in the first 79 minutes before being replaced by Ryan Wicher (Whitmer/Toledo, Ohio), who also saved one shot.

The game featured a 42-2 shot advantage for Owens, while they also had the advantage in corner kicks 10-0. Lorain's goalkeeper, Alex Coker, tallied 11 saves.

Next Up

Owens (1-0-0) will travel to Cincinnati to take on No. 7 Cincinnati State Technical and Community College on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The game will be held at the Blue Ash Soccer Complex.

Notes/Records/Statistical Facts

The previous single game record of 12 goals was achieved twice previously. The first time came against Kellogg Community College on Sept. 8, 2007 and most recently it was against Lorain County on Sept. 30, 2012.

The team's 17 goals today is eight short of the 1999 team's 25 goals for the entire season. Additionally, the team's 12 assists are seven short of the 19 that the 1998 team produced the entire season. 

The three assists by Combs give him one more than he had all of last year. He now has seven goals and five assists in his career. Jarrar pushed his career goal total to 12, along with six career assists. Campbell now has 13 goals and five assists in his career.

Almester, Salinaz and McCloud are all freshmen.
