Aguirre Shatters Assist Record As Owens Rolls To 11-1 Win Over Mercyhurst North East

Toledo, Ohio---Hector Aguirre Jr. (Rossford/Rossford, Ohio) had a single game school record six assists, while three others netted hat tricks to give the Owens Community College men's soccer team an 11-1 win over Mercyhurst North East Community College at home today.

It was the seventh straight win for Owens, which improved to 11-7 overall this year. The team travels to No. 14 Schoolcraft College (12-2-1) on Wednesday.

Aguirre Jr. broke the single game assist record, which had been held by three players. The freshman broke a record that stood since Michael Hamouda had four assists on Oct. 16, 2010 against Kellogg Community College. Aside from Hamouda, Jahvan Russell (Sept. 30, 2009 vs Lorain County) and Jeff Brown (Oct. 22, 2001 vs Findlay J.V.) also recorded four assists in a game.

Today's game saw Owens only leading 1-0 at halftime. Hakeem Sadler (Quality Academics/Greater Portmore, Jamaica) took a touch pass from Aguirre Jr. in front of the net and gave Owens the lead with 3:22 remaining in the half.

In the second half, Matt Almester (St. John's Jesuit/Rossford, Ohio) scored a hat trick in the first nine minutes with goals at the 45:28, 50:40 and 53:58 marks.

Aguirre Jr., Sadler and Josiah McCloud (Monclova Christian/Toledo, Ohio) assisted on those three goals.

Following that, Akeem McCarthy (Cornwall College/Montego Bay, Jamaica) scored the first of his three goals to give Owens a 5-0 lead at the 57:06 mark.

Joa'o Vitor Batista (Crescer Podium/Divinopolis, Brazil) continued the scoring with back-to-back goals just 59 seconds apart in the 66th and 67th minutes to make it a seven goal lead.

Michael Dingwall (Riverdale/Lehigh Acres, Fla.) made it 8-0 in the 75th minute before McCarthy and Batista scored back-to-back goals in the 77th and 78th minutes for a 10-0 lead. The goal by Batista completed his hat trick.

Mercyhurst North East's Devin Mason scored in the 80th minute to prevent the shutout, although McCarthy then completed his hat trick with the game's final goal in the 85th minute.

Owens was so dominant offensively in the second half that they produced 33 total shots just in the half alone. They finished with 46 total shots (32 on goal).

Abbas Al-Musawi made 21 saves in goal for Mercyhurst North East (6-5-3 overall).

For Owens, Kyle Rowan (Perrysburg/Perrysburg, Ohio) made one save for Owens over the first 57:06 of the game before being replaced by Alexander Renius (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) for the next 25:19. Dillon Ellinwood (Liberty Center/Liberty Center, Ohio) then saw his first collegiate action in goal over the game's final 7:35.

In total, the trio of Owens goalkeepers made two saves over three shots on goal.

For Owens, Batista totaled a team-high seven shots on goal, while McCarthy had the team-high in total shots (11).

With his six assists today, Aguirre Jr. now has a team-high seven this year.

Almester, meanwhile, increased his team-high goal total to 19. He pushed his career goal total to 37, which helped him pass Rodcliff Hall (35) for fourth place all-time today. Next up is Glenroy Miller with 42.

Furthermore, Almester has now scored at least one goal in his last seven games played. Today was his second hat trick this week and third overall this year.

McCarthy took over second place on the team in goals scored with his first career hat trick. The freshman now has eight goals this year. Batista's hat trick was also his first. He is fourth on the team with five goals.

Sadler and Dingwall each picked up their second goals of the season.

Owens is outscoring its opponents 31-3 during the seven game winning streak.
