Toledo, Ohio---Mikayla Ludwig, a 5-7 right-handed pitcher from Walter Wellborn High School in Anniston, Ala., has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Owens Community College next year.

Ludwig, who becomes the first student-athlete from the state of Alabama in the history of Owens athletics, is the fifth member of the 2016-17 recruiting class. She joins Noel Gilley (RHP/1B) of Ashley Ridge High School in Summerville, S.C., Courtney Cadle (SS) of Monroe High School in Monroe, Mich., Josie Monroe (C) of Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio, and Alexa Schmeltz (3B) from Eastwood High School in Pemberville, Ohio.

Ludwig will become a four-year letter winner in softball this spring under the tutelage of Brenda Vinson, and she also lettered one year in volleyball. Academically, she is in the top 10 of her class, currently at No. 3.

"Mikayla will be a nice asset to our pitching staff," said Owens Community College head coach Marcus Smith. "She's a hard thrower. Additionally, she has a good bat and will help us in the infield."

The Owens softball team, which captured Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and Region XII championships last year en route to a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament appearance, will open its 2016 season March 4-13 in Florida. They are scheduled to play 20 games during the trip.
