Carter, Leading Scorer For Owens Women's Basketball, Signs With NCAA Division I IPFW

Fort Wayne, Ind.---Kamilah Carter (Pioneer/Ann Arbor, Mich.), an outgoing sophomore on the Owens Community College women's basketball team, has signed with NCAA Division I Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW).

Carter recently finished a stellar season for Owens that saw her bring home a lot of hardware. She was named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American, First Team All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and First Team All-Region XII after the season. In addition to those honors, Carter also took home OCCAC player of the week three times: Nov. 10, Dec. 1, and Feb. 16. 

"We are thrilled to have Kamilah join our basketball team this upcoming year," said IPFW head women's basketball coach Chris Paul. "To be able to add a player of her caliber this late is a tremendous boost for our program. She is a combo guard who knows how to score; either by shooting the three or putting pressure on the defense by getting to the basket."

Carter became the fifth leading single-season scorer of all-time for Owens women's basketball with 559 points. She was also third in the conference with 20.1 points per game over 12 OCCAC matchups, while shooting 90-for-187 (48.1 percent) from the field. She was also fourth in the conference with 49 assists.

Overall, Carter averaged 19.3 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game overall in her only season with Owens, although she redshirted the 2012-13 season after transferring from Midland College in Texas.

Carter scored at least 10 points in every game, while reaching 20 or more points 12 times and 30 or more points one time. Her season-high came in a Dec. 21 win over Grand Rapids when she produced 31 points on 9-for-13 shooting (3-for-6 from 3-point range) and 10-for-11 shooting from the foul line. She had a season-high seven assists three times, a season-high six steals twice and a season-high eight rebounds once.

Her season shooting totals were 191-for-431 (44.3 percent) overall, 67-for-185 (36.2 percent) from 3-point range and 110-for-138 (79.7 percent) from the foul line.

Following the season, Carter was named the team's MVP.

Carter joins Allyson Bunch and KeShyra McCarver in the 2014-15 IPFW signing class. She also joins sophomore teammate Paige Wright (Northrop/Fort Wayne, Ind.), who previously signed with NCAA Division II California University of Pennsylvania, as one of two players to sign with four-year schools so far from last year's team.

The Owens women's basketball team was ranked as high as No. 4 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national poll last year while coming within one game of a return trip to the NJCAA Division II national tournament. The team finished 26-3 overall, 11-1 in the OCCAC (1st Place) and won a record tying 18 straight games at one point during the season.

IPFW finished 15-15 last year and advanced to the Women's Basketball Invitational before seeing their season end.
