Reynolds Scores 20, No. 4 Owens Pounds Olney Central 81-46 To Salvage Weekend Split

Vincennes, Ind.---Tatyana Reynolds (Rogers/Toledo, Ohio) scored 20 points today to help the No. 4 Owens Community College women's basketball team defeat Olney Central College 81-46 and salvage a weekend split in the Sodexo Classic hosted by Vincennes University.

Lakyn Gulley (South Side/Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Dyanna Freeman of Olney Central opened today's game by exchanging 3-pointers. However, two possessions later, Reynolds drained a 3-pointer to start a 19-0 run by Owens over the next 6:13.

Owens held a 24-7 lead through the first period. During that stretch, they outscored Olney Central 16-2 in the paint while forcing 11 turnovers and holding a 17-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

The second period was a little closer as Olney outscored Owens 8-6 in points in the paint and got six points from their bench, but Owens scored six more points off turnovers and held a 45-19 lead at the break.

Ariel Bethea (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) led the surge defensively for Owens with five steals through the first two periods.

Jeryn Reese (Mansfield/Mansfield, Ohio) scored seven points during a 11-2 run to open the second half for Owens, which led by as many as 42 following a layup from Aysah Ingram (Trotwood-Madison/Dayton, Ohio) with 1:36 left in the third period.

Reese then hit a layup two and a half minutes into the fourth period to give Owens its largest lead of the game at 43. Olney Central closed the game on an 8-2 run to trim their final margin to 35.

Reynolds scored her game-high 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting, including a 4-for-8 mark from 3-point range. Reese finished second in scoring with 17 points, while adding 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Ingram added 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Mikayla Ward (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) led all players in rebounds with 11, while Briana Williams (Stebbins/Dayton, Ohio) had 10 assists.

Jaycie Luna led Olney Central (3-2) with nine points.

On Saturday, Owens shot just 17-for-59 (28.8 percent) from the field in a 59-50 loss to Vincennes University.

Williams led Owens in scoring with 12 points, while Reese added 10. Ingram led the way in rebounds with nine, while Ward had eight.

Owens led 17-15 after the first period as Bethea put back a missed shot and Reynolds hit a pair of free throws to close the first 10 minutes. In a back-and-forth second period, the teams were tied for the seventh time in the game at 30-all with 57 seconds left, but Unique Conner hit a layup to give Vincennes a 32-30 lead at halftime.

In the third period, Owens fell victim to a 9-0 Vincennes run to open play. Down 41-30 with 5:14 left in the period, Owens trimmed their deficit to three with 2:46 left via a layup from Reese, but Vincennes took a five point lead into the final 10 minutes.

Owens trimmed the Vincennes lead to one with 8:07 left in the fourth and had a chance to take the lead, but missed a layup. Vincennes got a jumper from Kyra Tucker on the other end and closed the game on a 9-1 run to provide the final margin.

Looking Ahead

Owens is now 5-2 overall. They will be back in action on Tuesday at home against No. 11 Kalamazoo Valley Community College at 6 p.m.
