No. 7 Owens Cruises Past Sinclair 65-45, Stay Undefeated In Conference Play

Dayton, Ohio---Jeryn Reese (Mansfield/Mansfield, Ohio) registered 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the No. 7 Owens Community College women's basketball team past Sinclair Community College 65-45 on the road today.

With the win, Owens is now 10-4 overall and 2-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play.

In the first period, the combination of Briana Williams (Stebbins/Dayton, Ohio) and Tatyana Reynolds (Rogers/Toledo, Ohio) had 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including a 2-for-3 mark from three point range. 

Owens scored the game's first six points, led by 11 with 5:50 left in the first period and were up by as many as 15 before closing the period with a 23-10 lead via a left corner, mid-range jumper from Reese.

In the second period, Kyra Johnson's (Stevenson/Livonia, Mich.) running layup off the glass gave Owens its largest lead of the half at 34-17 with 2:03 remaining.

Reese finished 3-for-5 from the field in the second period and had six points and three rebounds during that stretch.

In the third period, a layup from Reese stretched the Owens lead to 20 with 7:05 left. Three minutes later, the lead was 20 once again after a bucket from Johnson down low. Then, with just over three minutes left in the period, Reese hit a jumper from just inside the three point line to double up Sinclair 44-22.

Aysah Ingram (Trotwood-Madison/Dayton, Ohio) opened the fourth period with a second chance layup to begin an 11-2 run, which put Owens up 57-31 with 6:33 left.

In the second half, Reese produced eight points, while Mikayla Ward (Huron/Ypsilanti, Mich.) and Ingram produced eight rebounds apiece. Williams and Lakyn Gulley (South Side/Fort Wayne, Ind.) each added six points, while Gulley produced all three of the team's steals in the final 20 minutes.

Furthermore, Owens produced 16 offensive rebounds in the second half, which was three more rebounds than Sinclair had overall in the half.

Overall, Reese finished 9-for-14 from the field, and she added two rebounds along with the rest of the stat line. Williams added 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting, while adding a team-high four assists and four rebounds. Gulley chipped in 10 points, a team-high five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Ingram led the team in rebounds with 11 (six offensive).

Sinclair was led by Alona Skipper, who had 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting from three point range. Sara Thornton and Madison Schroeder each added 10. Ashtin Brandon led the home team in rebounds with seven.

Owens held scoring advantages in the paint (38-20), off turnovers (16-7) and via the bench (14-9), while holding Sinclair to zero chance points along with producing 14 of their own.

Sinclair fell to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in OCCAC play with the loss. The two teams will meet again Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, Owens will hit the road and take on NJCAA Division I Indian River State College and Palm Beach State College on Dec. 28-29 in Palm Beach, Fla. as part of the New Year's Basketball Bash. They will resume conference play on Jan. 6 at Lorain County Community College.

Notes

Reese's 18 points today broke a streak of four games in which she scored in single digits. Her nine field goals made today matched her total from the previous four games combined.

Ingram has recorded double digits in rebounds in three straight and four of the past five games. She has seven games with at least 10 rebounds this year and 11 with at least nine.

Mekaila Grose (Madison/Mansfield, Ohio) recorded a season-high 24 minutes in today's game. and she totaled two points and six rebounds. Furthermore, she has at least five rebounds in four of the team's past five games.
