No. 10 Owens Routs Cuyahoga 102-48, Wins 28th Straight Conference Game

Toledo, Ohio---Five players reached double figures, led by Lakyn Gulley's (South Side/Fort Wayne, Ind.) 22 points, as the No. 10 Owens Community College women's basketball team cruised past Cuyahoga Community College 102-48 on Wednesday.

Owens never trailed in the game en route to their sixth straight win overall and 28th straight regular season conference win. They improved to 16-6 overall and 7-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. Cuyahoga fell to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in OCCAC play.

Cuyahoga faced a one point deficit with 6:44 left in the first quarter, but Owens closed on a 14-2 run that included the final 10 points of the quarter. The run featured points from five different players.

In the second quarter, Cuyahoga scored first and trailed by 12 with 7:17 left. At that point, Gulley buried a 3-pointer to spur a 9-0 run. Gulley also capped the run with another 3-pointer and a free throw. 

A few moments later, Owens went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Sybil Roseboro (Elyria/Elyria, Ohio) to take a 50-20 lead with 1:35 left.

At the half, Owens led by 29. Gulley had a game-high 15 points through the first 20 minutes on 5-for-7 shooting, followed by 12 points and five assists from Briana Williams (Stebbins/Dayton, Ohio).

In the third quarter, Owens led by as 36 on three occasions. A jumper from Tatyana Reynolds (Rogers/Toledo, Ohio) made it 73-37 with 2:56 left. Then, a jumper from Roseboro, followed by a 3-pointer from Reynolds gave Owens its other two 36 point leads. 

The misery continued for Cuyahoga in the fourth quarter as Owens outscored the visitors 24-4, which included an 18-0 run over a five minute stretch in the middle of the quarter. Seven different players scored during that run, capped by a free throw from Mekaila Grose (Madison/Mansfield, Ohio) that put Owens up 98-46 with 3:40 left.

Overall, Owens outscored Cuyahoga 38-24 in the paint, 29-5 in points off turnovers and 25-14 in bench points.

Aside from her 22 points, Gulley finished 8-for-12 from the field, including a 4-for-8 mark from 3-point range. She added eight assists and a game-high six steals. Reynolds added 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a 3-for-5 finish from 3-point range.

Reese chipped in 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, while Roseboro and Williams each had 14 points. Along with that, Williams led all players with nine assists. 

Destini Turner led Cuyahoga with 12 points, while Darian Carter added 10.

Owens finished 38-for-74 (51.4 percent) from the field, 11-for-24 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range and 15-for-23 (65.2 percent) from the foul line. They forced 24 Cuyahoga turnovers, blocked nine shots and swiped 17 steals.

Owens will be back in action next Wednesday at home against Lorain County Community College at 5:30 p.m. Along with the men's game afterwards, the doubleheader will be broadcasted on BCSN.

Notes

In her past six games, Reese is averaging 18.3 points and 14.7 rebounds. She has a double-double in five of those six games. 

Roseboro reached double figures for the first time since Jan. 13. Since making her season debut on Dec. 29, she has notched double figures in four of seven games.

Reynolds finished just two points shy of her career-high. She did tie her season-high for field goal percentage, though.

Gulley tied her season-high in scoring that was set on Oct. 31 vs Roane State. It was her third 20 plus point game of the season.
