Reese Captures NJCAA Second Team All-American Recognition

Toledo, Ohio---Jeryn Reese (Mansfield/Mansfield, Ohio), a freshman forward for the Owens Community College women's basketball team, has been named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Second Team All-American.

Reese led Owens to a 29-7 record overall, a perfect 14-0 mark in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play, a Region XII District I tournament championship and a fifth place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. She led the team in scoring (13.8 PPG) and rebounding (10.9 PPG), while adding 1.1 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest.

In OCCAC play, Reese was named First Team All-OCCAC and OCCAC Player of the Year after averaging 16.1 points, 12.7 rebounds, 2.8 steals, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 assists over 14 games. She shot 46.4 percent from the field, while finishing eighth in the league in scoring, second in rebounding, third in steals and fifth in blocks.

During the season, Reese captured OCCAC Player of the Week honors five times and was NJCAA Division II Player of the Week once. She was also named the Region XII District I tournament MVP after producing 30 points and 20 rebounds in both games.

In four NJCAA Division II National Tournament games, Reese averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 assists per game and was named to the all-tournament team.

Reese's selection marks the second consecutive year an Owens women's basketball student-athlete has earned NJCAA All-American status after Sierra Harley (Africentric/Columbus, Ohio) was named a First Team All-American in 2014-15. Overall, she becomes the sixth NJCAA All-American in program history joining Harley, Michelle Vorst (First Team, 2002-03); Stephanie Galant (Honorable Mention, 1999-00); Amy Amstutz (First Team, 1998-99) and Elizabeth Harris (Honorable Mention, 1997-98).

The Owens women's basketball program recently finished a 29-7 season that included the program's fourth straight Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) championship, a Region XII District I championship and a fifth place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament. The team advanced as far as the NJCAA Elite 8.

It was the program's second straight and third appearance in the past four years at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament, where they have recorded three top 10 finishes in the past 4 seasons (7th in 2012-13, 3rd in 2014-15 and 5th in 2015-16). In 2014-15, the team advanced to the NJCAA Division II Final 4. The team has also captured five of the past six OCCAC championships and three of the past four Region XII District I championships.

Furthermore, the program has won at least 25 games in each of the past seven seasons. During that time, the program has compiled a 195-37 record (.841 winning percentage), including an 81-9 record (.900 winning percentage) in OCCAC play.

Head coach Michael Llanas, who recently completed his 12th season at Owens, has compiled a 294-96 record during that time. Furthermore, he has achieved a 127-29 record in OCCAC play with six OCCAC championships.
