Toledo, Ohio---Essence Cowan (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) scored a season-high 24 points to lead the No. 3 Owens Community College women's basketball team to a 103-31 win over Kellogg Community College in the SHAC tonight.

With the win, Owens improved to 11-0 overall and tied the program record for the best start in a single season. This year's team can break the record Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Oakland Community College in the SHAC. Kellogg fell to 1-8 this year with the loss.

Cowan, who finished 9-for-16 from the field, including a 6-for-11 finish from 3-point range, also recorded season-highs in assists (7), rebounds (6) and steals (4). Ariel Bethea (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished second on the team in scoring with 19 points, while adding nine rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocks.

Cowan scored 16 points over the game's first seven minutes to propel Owens to a 22-0 start. Kellogg's first basket didn't come until Diamond Harvey made a layup with 2:25 left in the first quarter, and Owens led 30-5 through one.

Brenda Pennington (Bishop Noll/Hammond, Ind.), who had five points, six rebounds and six assists, got Owens on the board in the second quarter with a free throw in the first minute. Jeryn Reese (Mansfield/Mansfield, Ohio) followed with back-to-back layups before Pennington added a layup to give Owens a 37-5 lead.

Kellogg responded with four straight and eight of the game's next 10 points to trim the deficit to 26. Reese then scored three straight before Harvey made a free throw. Up 28, Owens closed the half on a 13-0 run, including six points in the final 47 seconds on a pair of layups from Courizma Williams (Hughes/Cincinnati, Ohio) and a jumper from Bethea.

Kaylah Ivey (Westerville South/Westerville, Ohio), who had 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds (six offensive) added four points during that half closing run. Williams finished with a season-high 16 points, along with three assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Sybil Roseboro (Elyria/Elyria, Ohio) opened the second half by stealing Kellogg's inbounds pass. She made a pair of free throws after being fouled going in for a layup. Just over four minutes later, she made two more free throws to close a 10-0 run to open the half. In fact, it closed a 23-0 run for Owens going back to the second quarter.

The barrage didn't slow up much, either. After Alexis Cerven's jumper ended the 10-0 run, Haili Mossing (Evergreen/Metamora, Ohio), Cowan and Williams combined for three consecutive 3-pointers to put Owens up 74-16.

A little later, Williams and Mossing each produced another 3-pointer before Bethea hit a jumper and a free throw sandwiched around a Cowan jumper to give Owens an 86-23 lead late in the quarter.

After both teams struggled their way to seven combined points over the fourth quarter's first four minutes, Bethea hit three consecutive jumpers and Roseboro drained a 3-pointer to put Owens on the brink of the century mark for the third time this year.

Bethea hit another jumper, followed by one free throw apiece from Williams and Roseboro, as Owens closed the game on an 11-0 run.

Mossing finished with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench, while Roseboro finished with eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Reese rounded out the eight-person rotation for Owens with seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

As a team, Owens finished 39-for-74 (52.7 percent) from the field, including an 11-for-27 (40.7 percent) from 3-point range. In fact, they made as many 3-pointers as Kellogg made total field goals. Owens also held a 55-23 advantage in rebounds, including a 20-7 margin in offensive boards. On top of that, they committed a season-low 10 turnovers.

Notes

Owens is now 64-1 at home since Feb. 2012. They have also won 25 consecutive regular season games dating back to Jan. 6 of last year, which is just four short of tying the program's record, which is currently held by the 2014-15 team that won its final 29 regular season games after losing the season opener.
