Elyria, Ohio---The No. 2 Owens Community College women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 110-24 win over Lorain County Community College on the road today as eight players reached double figures in scoring.
With the win, Owens is now 23-0 overall and 10-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play entering Saturday's 1 p.m. home game against Sinclair Community College. Lorain County fell to 2-22 overall (0-11 OCCAC) with the loss.
Sybil Roseboro (Elyria/Elyria, Ohio), who was playing in front of her hometown crowd, scored a game-high 18 points, while adding five assists, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Essence Cowan (Lima Senior/Lima, Ohio) and Denissa Sly (Northmont/Englewood, Ohio) each added 13 points.
Lorain County actually scored the game's first points on a Madi Bonner 3-pointer just 39 seconds in, but Owens took the lead on a Brenda Pennington (Bishop Noll/Hammond, Ind.) layup with 8:21 left and never trailed again.
In fact, following Bonner's shot, Owens scored the game's next 21 points over a seven minute stretch. Olivia Frost (North Baltimore/North Baltimore, Ohio) capped the run by hitting a jumper with two minutes left in the quarter.
Tyeisha Sain then scored three straight points for Lorain County, but Owens then scored 21 straight points once again to take a 42-6 lead. The run stretched midway through the second quarter, and Lorain County's first points in the quarter came with 4:47 left on a Heather Smyth free throw.
Following that free throw, Owens nearly shutout Lorain County the rest of the half, but a botched play led to an easy layup for Carrie Carlson with seven seconds left. Despite that, Owens led 54-9 at the half.
In the third quarter, Owens opened with an 11-0 run over the first 2:49. Pennington scored the final five points during the run. A little later, Sain's jumper pulled her team within 59, but Owens closed the quarter on a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Roseboro to take an 83-15 lead.
A jumper from Ariel Bethea (Huron/Ann Arbor, Mich.) completed an 18-0 run with 8:10 left in the game and gave Owens a 92-15 lead. From there, Owens allowed just a trio of 3-pointers, including one banked off the glass, while also scoring the game's final 10 points.
While Bethea finished with 12 points and a team-high six steals, Jeryn Reese (Mansfield/Mansfield, Ohio) finished with the game's lone double-double by getting 11 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks. Pennington added 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Kaylah Ivey (Westerville South/Westerville, Ohio) added 10 points and eight rebounds in just 12 minutes, while Courizma Williams (Hughes/Cincinnati, Ohio) had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Haili Mossing (Evergreen/Metamora, Ohio) rounded out the scoring with four points and three rebounds.
As a team, Owens shot 45-for-96 (46.9 percent) from the field, while holding Lorain County to a 9-for-52 (17.3 percent) finish. Lorain County also made just 4-for-22 from 3-point range and had 37 turnovers on 28 steals for Owens.
NOTES
Owens has now won 37 straight regular season games dating back to Jan. 6 of last season. On top of that, they have also won 43 straight regular season conference games dating back to Feb. 8, 2014.
Following tonight's output, Reese now sits at 796 career points. She passed Tammy Murphy (795, 1996-98) on the career scoring list tonight, and she is now four points away from becoming just the 13th player in program history to record 800 career points. Next up on the list is Dawn Spencer (818, 1995-97).
Bethea, meanwhile, is 13 points away from 600 in her career. She already holds the single season and career steals records, and she pushed those totals to 114 and 211, respectively, tonight.
