Smith, No. 3 Owens Sweep Edison, Remain Perfect In Conference Play

Toledo, Ohio---Four players recorded at least seven kills as the No. 3 Owens Community College women's volleyball team cruised to a 25-12, 25-7, 25-17 win over Edison Community College on the road tonight.

With the victory, Owens improves to 18-3 overall and 7-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. The team's next action will come when it travels to Grand Rapids, Mich. for the Raider Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. 

In tonight's match, Edison stayed closed with Owens for the first 13 points of the match. Holding a 7-6 lead, Owens then reeled off 11-1 run to put the set away. During the run, Ashley Pleiman (Fort Loramie/Fort Loramie, Ohio) and Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen/New Bremen, Ohio) each recorded a pair of kills.

Pleiman finished off the set with a kill from the left side on an assist from Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.), who totaled 13 assists in the match. Heitkamp finished the first set with a team-high five kills.

In the second set, Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) started on serve for Owens and led the team to seven straight points. Olivia Hermiller's (Ottawa-Glandorf/Ottawa, Ohio) kill moments later made it 10-1. Then, with a 15-5 lead, Owens closed the set on a 10-2 run, highlighted by an ace and five assists from Carrigan Gray (Liberty-Benton/Findlay, Ohio).

Once again, Owens got off to a good start in the third set. They scored 10 of the first 11 points with the run being capped by a kill from Tyanna Smith (Bowling Green/Bowling Green, Ohio). Edison didn't record its first kill until the 14th point of the set, ,but it kick started a rally that pulled them as close as four on two occasions. Owens, however, scored the final three points to seal the match.

Erika Angstmann (St. Mary's Memorial/St. Mary's, Ohio) led Owens with nine kills, while Heitkamp added eight. Tylutki and Smith each chipped in seven apiece, and Pleiman finished with five.

Gray (20) led the team in assists with 20, while Gyori had a team-high 16 digs. Smith (5) and Annie Lindeman (Ottoville/Ottoville, Ohio) with three led Owens in blocks.

As a team, Owens hit .410 with 41 kills. They hit .400 in the first set and .636 in the second set. 

Notes

Owens has now won 14 of its past 15 matches this year. The lone loss came to No. 1 Parkland, and they have defeated four top 20 teams during that stretch.
