Toledo, Ohio---Tyanna Smith (Bowling Green/Bowling Green, Ohio) produced 10 kills and four blocks as the No. 2 Owens Community College women's volleyball team swept Edison Community College 25-8, 25-4, 25-19 to close the regular season.

Owens has now won 11 straight and improved its record to 35-4 overall and 14-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. The team only lost one set during conference play and has now won 28 straight regular season conference matches.

Tonight's Win

In the first set, Smith and Erika Angstmann (St. Mary's Memorial/St. Mary's, Ohio) each produced five kills as Owens totaled 15 as a team and hit .458. Behind that strong hitting, Owens scored the first 10 points of the match and held Edison without a kill over the first 16 points.

Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.), who had all four of her aces in the first set, and Annie Lindeman (Ottoville/Ottoville, Ohio) teamed up for back-to-back kills from opposite sides to give Owens a 17-4 lead. Moments later, two more kills from Angstmann and Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) made it 21-6.

Angstmann then produced her fifth kill and an ace, followed by a Smith kill down the middle as Owens took the first set.

Owens started strong, once again, in the second set as they scored the first seven points, highlighted by an ace from Niki Polce (Huron/New Boston, Mich.) and a pair of kills from Angstmann as Edison struggled with its serve receive.

Edison responded with two straight points before Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen/New Bremen, Ohio) picked up her first kill to start a 6-0 run. Following a two-hit error, they went on another 6-0 run to open up a 19-3 lead.

Edison swatted home just its second kill of the set before Owens scored the final six points of the set. During that third and final 6-0 run, Angstmann had three aces while Ashley Pleiman (Fort Loramie/Fort Loramie, Ohio) and Olivia Hermiller (Ottawa-Glandorf/Ottawa, Ohio) each had a kill.

The third set was much closer than the first two sets, although Owens remained in control throughout. Following a 3-0 run to open the set by Owens that featured kills from Tylutki, Heitkamp and Smith, Edison scored three of the next four points.

Owens responded with six of the next seven points and led 10-4 following an Edison attack that went out of bounds. A short time later, Heitkamp's second and third kills of the set put Owens up 15-7. She added another kill a short time later to make it 18-10. Then, following a kill from Smith that made it 20-13, Edison rallied for four straight points.

Lindeman, however, ended the run with a kill from the left side as Owens scored five of the set's final seven points to finish the sweep.

Stat Leaders

Aside from Smith, Angstmann finished second on the team with nine kills, while Heitkamp added six. Smith hit a team-high .600, followed by Angstmann's .583. Tylutki led the team with 24 assists, while Carrigan Gray (Liberty-Benton/Findlay, Ohio) had 12. Angstmann and Tylutki each had four aces, while Polce (17) and Gyori (14) led the team in digs. Smith and Heitkamp each had a team-high four blocks.

Children's Medical Missions West (CMM)

Tonight's match was used as a fundraiser for CMM, which is a 14-year-old organization that has brought over 380 children to the United States for free medical care that they could not have received in their home country. Each child's airfare is also covered entirely by donations. Specifically, most of the funds for tonight's match went to a child named Florence, who came to the United States and had Cleft lip and palate surgery. The rest of the money raised went to CMM, which is a strictly volunteer organization.

The Owens volleyball program would like to thank everyone who came out tonight and made donations and took part in the many raffles. In addition, the businesses or organizations that made contributions or submitted items to be raffled were: Arturo's Pizza Kitchen, PT Works of Wapakoneta, Schwieterman Pharmacy, Rave Cinemas, D & R Cabinets By Design LLC, Toledo Walleye, Toledo Mud Hens, Libbey Glass, Tony Packo's and Ford's Flat Rock Assembly Plant.
