#2 Owens Finishes Week Strong

Toledo, OH -- After another busy week, the Owens Volleyball program finished play with a record of 4-0, and the team didn't drop one set along the way.

Match #1: Owens 3 Cuyahoga 0

The week started with a Wednesday evening match against Cuyahoga. The Express would win the match in straight sets, winning 25-18, 25-16, and 25-13. 

Owens was lead on the attack by freshman Arielle Snider, who finished the match with a team high 12 kills and a .688 kill percentage for the night. Fellow freshman, Tyriana Settles, finished in double digits in both kills (11) and digs (19). Her dig total was a team best. Rebecca Brown netted all 35 assists for the Express during the match. Freshman Raelyn Hutchinson and Olivia Materni each had 11 digs during the competition against the Triceratops. Semira Neely was a force at the net, totaling two solo blocks and five block assists. 

Match #2: Owens 3 Hocking 0

Owens hit the court of Friday night for a match against Hocking, winning in straight sets one again. The Express won 25-10, 25-14, and 25-10.

The usual suspects led the way once more for the Express. Tyriana Settles would lead the attack with 14 kills with a .619 kill percentage. She also had eight digs against the Hawks. Olivia Materni continued her solid play in the back row with 15 digs while Raelyn Hutchinson had ten. Rebecca Brown would finish with 30 of the Express's 32 total assists. Arielle Snider had two solo blocks while Semia Neely had four block assists at the net. Neely and Snider each had six kills in the match, while Shyah Wheeler finished with five.

Match #3: Owens 3 Columbus State 0

The biggest match of the weekend was played on Saturday morning. Owens would face off against the No. 3 ranked Columbus State Cougars. Once again, Owens would be up to the challenge, as they beat the Cougars 25-3, 25-5, and 25-14 to win in straight sets once more. 

Tyriana Settles continued her hot stretch on the attack, leading the way with 14 kills. Settles continued to show her versatility too, finishing tied for the team lead in digs with 21. Kayla Bekier finished with nine kills off the front line coupled with four block assists. Rebecca Brown was an assists machine, finishing with 37 assists, while Olivia Materni was a back row warrior, tallying 21 digs. Semira Neely would have seven block assists while Shyah Wheeler had two solo blocks up front. 

Match #4: Owens 3 St. Clair 0

In the final Saturday match for the Express, they took on St. Clair out of Michigan. Owens and the Skippers would play a tightly contested match, but the Express were able to prevail in straight sets. The red and black won 25-15, 25-20, and 25-18. 

Tyriana Settles and Arielle Snider closed the day out each netting double digit kills. Settles would finish with 16 total kills while Snider would finish with ten. Settles also had 11 digs. Olivia Materni was lights out in the back row, finishing with 22 total digs and Raelyn Hutchison had 11 digs. Rebecca Brown finished with 34 total assists. Kayla Bekier finished the match with eight total kills. 

Owens finished the week 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the OCCAC. The team is on a season high nine match winning streak.

The Express will be in action next week on Tuesday at Clark State with another match Wednesday at Lorain. Owens will welcome Sinclair in next weekend. 

Notes

Tyriana Settles, as of publication, was the national leader Division III in kills with 220 total. Rebecca Brown was the national leader as of publication in total assists with 541 and she is third nationally in assists per set. The same can be said for Olivia Materni when it comes to total digs. She is the national leader as of publication with 254 total for the year. Semira Neely is currently ranked second nationally in total blocks with 49.
