Denny Caldwell is in his 14th season as an assistant coach for the Owens women's volleyball program in 2021 after capturing back-to-back-to back National Championships in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

2018 was a special year for the Owens volleyball program. The team lost their first match of the season and then reeled off 18 straight wins to vault them to #2 in the national rankings for Division III, adn the team would finish the season as the top ranked team in the country. Owens would have its second straight undefeated conference season, and they would go on to sweep the Regional and District Tournaments, never dropping a set along the way. In national tournament play, Owens would win in straight sets against its first two opponents, before beating Eastfield in five sets to win the program's first national title. 

In his twelve seasons with Owens, Caldwell has compiled a 413-111 record while capturing eight OCCAC championships and five Region XII District E/F Championships. In 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012 and 2010, the team qualified for the NJCAA D-II National Tournament, where they finished second in 2017, third in 2016, ninth in 2015 and fourth in 2012. Last year's finish was the best finish in program history at the D-II level (2001-present).

Over the past four seasons, Caldwell has helped Owens compile a 151-17 record overall, including a 60-0 record in conference play. During that stretch, the program won back-to-back-to-back-to-back OCCAC championships, three Region XII District F tournament titles and made three appearances in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. From 2010-12, Caldwell helped guide Owens to a 124-25 record overall and a 35-1 record in OCCAC play.

2017 was a historic season for the Owens Express Volleyball program.His team garnered their first #1 overall ranking in the NJCAA Division II Poll on 9/26/17 and held onto the top spot until the end of the regular season. The team won their first 40 matches in a row before falling in the Division II National Championship game. The Express's national runner-up finish is the highest for the program at the Division II level, and it also marked the second year in a row that an Owens team finished in the top three of the National Tournament. 

In 2016, under the assistance of Caldwell, Owens finished 41-5 overall and 14-0 in OCCAC play. In the postseason, the team won the Region XII District F championship and advanced to the NJCAA Division II Final Four before finishing third in the nation.

Caldwell assisted in a 40-7 season in 2015, which saw the team win the OCCAC championship with a 14-0 record. In the postseason, the team won the Region XII District E tournament and finished ninth in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

In each of the past two seasons, a pair of Owens players have captured NJCAA All-American recognition. In 2016, Brooke Gyori (First Team) and Tyanna Smith (Second Team) were honored. In 2015, Macy Reigelsperger (First Team) and Gyori (Honorable Mention) were recognized. Gyori (2016) and Reigelsperger (2015) were also named the OCCAC player of the year and both went on to play at NCAA Division I University of Tennessee at Martin following their time at Owens.

In 2014, Caldwell helped guide Owens to a 34-11 overall record and a second place finish in the OCCAC with a 12-2 mark. The team advanced to the Region XII District E loser's bracket finals before falling to No. 6 Columbus State. Following the season, four players earned All-OCCAC honors, two earned All-Region XII honors and sophomore libero Ciarra Wirick was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

Caldwell's coaching experience includes previously serving as the boys head volleyball coach at Springfield High School from 1990-93. Additionally, Caldwell served as men's head volleyball coach at the University of Toledo from 1990-91 and at Bowling Green State University from 1974-75. The Columbus North High School graduate also was the women's head volleyball coach at Eastern Michigan University in 1976.

Caldwell earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he was a member of the school's volleyball program where he earned the team's Most Improved Player Award and Ohio Valley Regional All Star honors.

Moreover, Caldwell's volleyball experience includes previously serving as team captain for the USA Senior National Volleyball Team. In 2008, he received a bronze medal in the USAV National Championships Men's 55 and was a member of the Continental Cup Champions (USA vs. Canada) in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Caldwell has also received a master's degree in health and physical education from Bowling Green State University. He currently resides in Monroe, Mich.
