TOLEDO, Ohio --- Tommy Moreno, a 6-3 freshman guard for the Owens Community College men's basketball team, has been selected as the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) player of the week.
Moreno (Start/Toledo, Ohio) becomes the first player of the week selection of the season for the Express and the most recent winner since Jacob Cousino (2/3/20). He's just the third honoree from the Red and White since the start of the 2017-18 season, a group that also includes Gabe Simpson (2/5/18).
"This is a great honor for Tommy and our program," Owens men's basketball head coach Michael Llanas said. "He had a tremendous performance for us on Saturday, and I'm really happy for him earning this honor."
Moreno had season-highs in points (27) and rebounds (10) while shooting 11-for-21 from the field, including 2-for-3 from long distance and 3-for-3 from the foul line in his team's loss to Delta on Saturday. He was one of just five Owens players dressed, a number that dropped to four by game's end because of an injury. Moreno logged all 40 minutes in the gutty performance.
Moreno's first career double-double came in the team's lone game of the week. He is averaging 16.2 points, six boards and 2.5 steals per game this year.
Owens (1-6) is scheduled to open conference play on Dec. 18 at Terra State Community College with tip at 3 p.m. They'll return home Dec. 22 against Macomb at 3 p.m. to conclude the calendar year.
