Murry's 27 Helps No. 11 Owens Comeback From 15-Point Deficit In 88-79 Win In League Opener

Dayton, Ohio---The No. 11 Owens Community College men's basketball team turned a 33-18 late first half deficit into an 88-79 win over Sinclair Community College on the road today in their conference opener.

Down 15 with 4:50 remaining in the first half, John Murry (North Central/Indianapolis, Ind.) led an 18-3 run to close the half as Owens tied the game at 36-all heading into the break. During the run, he scored eight points while shooting 2-for-3 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the foul line. He also had two rebounds and one assist during the run.

In the first half, Owens helped its comeback with 15 points off turnovers and an 18-2 advantage in bench points.

Owens then opened the second half on an 8-0 run, led by four points from Darren Groves (Thurgood Marshall/Dayton, Ohio). Later, after a Westley Parr layup made it a 50-42 game with 16:08 left, Owens went on a 7-0 run to push the lead up to 15. The run was capped by an Austin Somerfield (Greenville/Greenville, Mich.) layup. A short time later, Somerfield added a 3-pointer to give Owens a 16-point lead with 14:14 left.

Owens pushed its lead to as many as 22 before Sinclair rallied to cut their deficit to as few as seven with just under three minutes left. The game was then put away at the free throw line.

Murry led all scorers with 27 points, while Edmond Early Jr. (Thurgood Marshall/Dayton, Ohio) 13, Kenny Jones (Clay/South Bend, Ind.) added 12 and Groves had 10. Murry also led the team with 15 rebounds (eight offensive), and added two assists, one steal and one block.

Cameron White (Bowsher/Toledo, Ohio) and Justin Baker (Cathedral/Indianapolis, Ind.), who both saw added playing time in the absence of the team's second leading scorer and starting point guard Shaakir Lindsey (Teaneck/Teaneck, N.J.) each added a team-high five assists. Baker also did not have a turnover.

Despite a season-low free throw shooting percentage (11-for-20, 55 percent), Owens helped itself with a 9-for-22 (40.9 percent) finish from 3-point range. They also finished 34-for-74 (45.9 percent) overall from the field. Additionally, the team's 21 offensive rebounds was one off the team's season-high.

Marcellous Washington (24), Manny Powell Jr. (17), Westley Parr (16) and Connor Myslowski (14) all reached double figures for Sinclair (10-6, 0-2 OCCAC). Steven Perriere added a team-high 11 rebounds.

Owens is now 13-4 overall and 1-0 in the OCCAC. They will host Cuyahoga Community College in the SHAC on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on BCSN.

Notes

After not having a double figure rebounding game all of last year, Murry now has three this year. This game marked his career-high in total rebounds and offensive rebounds.
