Murry Reaches 1,000 Career Points, No. 16 Owens Men Destroy Edison 108-55

Piqua, Ohio---Shaakir Lindsey (Teaneck/Teaneck, N.J.) scored a team-high 22 points, but John Murry's (North Central/Indianapolis, Ind.) 19 points helped him reach a milestone in today's 108-55 win over Edison Community College on the road.

Murry finished 8-for-17 from the field (2-for-6 from 3-point range) and 1-for-2 from the foul line to eclipse 1,000 career points. He entered today needing three points to reach the mark, and he now sits at 1,016 points.

The game itself saw Owens jump out to 9-0 and 25-10 leads before Edison charged back to take a 31-30 lead with 5:48 left in the half. Starting with a layup from Murry, however, Owens closed the half on a 22-6 run.

In the second half, the Owens defense held Edison to 18 points and led by as many as 53 on multiple occasions down the stretch. Starting from the point of Edison's last lead with just under six minutes left in the half, Owens held a 78-24 scoring advantage.

Lindsey scored his team-high 22 on 9-for-14 shooting, which included a 3-for-7 finish from 3-point range. He added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Tossing in Murry's 19, Owens had four others also reach double figures including Austin Somerfield (Greenville/Greenville, Mich.) with 17, Edmond Early Jr. (Thurgood Marshall/Dayton, Ohio) with 14, Pete Firlik (Catholic Central/Grand Rapids, Mich.) with 11 and Jones with 10.

Somerfield added a team-high 10 rebounds, while Early Jr. had a team-high eight assists. As a team, Owens had 27 assists on 42 made field goals. They shot 15-for-34 from 3-point range.

Malik Thurman scored a team-high 21 for Edison, while Caleb Poland added 17.

Owens improved to 21-6 overall and 9-2 in OCCAC play with the win, while Edison fell to 7-17 overall and 0-11 in OCCAC play with the loss. Owens will host Lorain County Community College at 7:30 p.m. in the SHAC on Wednesday.

Notes

Owens had now reached the century mark in scoring 13 times this year, including three straight and five of the past seven. They are now averaging 94.9 points per game. 

It is unknown how many players have reached 1,000 career points in Owens men's basketball history, but Murry is the first player to reach the mark since James Kelly did it from 2011-13.
