Murry Earns First Team Honors, No. 14 Owens Men Receive Postseason Honors

Toledo, Ohio---Owens Community College men's basketball sophomore guard John Murry (North Central/Indianapolis, Ind.) was named First Team All-Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) for the second straight year as the OCCAC announced its 2014-15 postseason basketball awards today.

Murry, who also finished second in league MVP voting behind Lakeland's Mike Davis, averaged 17.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game in league play for Owens (24-6 overall, 12-2 OCCAC). He led the team to a share of its second straight OCCAC championship while finishing third in the conference in scoring.

Kenny Jones (Clay/South Bend, Ind.) earned Second Team All-OCCAC honors. The sophomore forward averaged 13.1 points, eight rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game for Owens.

Freshmen Darren Groves (Thurgood Marshall/Dayton, Ohio) and Pete Firlik (Catholic Central/Grand Rapids, Mich.) were named Honorable Mention All-OCCAC. Groves, a forward, averaged 10.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 blocks per game, while Firlik, a guard, averaged 11 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in league play.

In conference play, Owens averaged a league best 100.1 points per game. Sophomore guard Shaakir Lindsey (Teaneck/Teaneck, N.J.) led the league in assists for the second straight year. Owens had five players average in double figures in league play, and seven that averaged at least 9.2 PPG.

In conference play, Murry finished ninth in the league in scoring, while Jones (8th) and Groves (9th) both finished in the top 10 in rebounding. Jones also finished second in the league in blocks per game (1.8 BPG).

The Owens men will open postseason play tomorrow at 8 p.m. against No. 11 Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in the Region XII District 11 semifinals. You can watch the game here
