Toledo, OH---The Express men's soccer team started its season off with a 5-1 win over No. 16 Cincinnati State behind two goals each from Glenroy Miller and Derrick Skillman.

"I just thought the boys had a lot of desire," said Express men's soccer head coach Art Johnson. "They just played up to their potential. It was just a great start and a great win against a nationally ranked opponent."

It was the first time Owens has defeated Cincinnati State in the regular season since a 3-0 win on Oct. 11, 2006. It was also the largest defeat Cincinnati State has suffered to any opponent since 2006.

Just 10:12 into the game, Novak Vuk Janicic moved the ball towards the goal and was fouled in the box. Nickyle Webber scored the penalty kick to put the Express up 1-0.

Then, Miller scored at the 17:02 and 19:55 marks of the first half. On the first cole, Troy Watson made a long pass upfield, Juavanie Cole took one step and crossed it to Miller, who knocked it in. Cole received a solo assist on the second goal.

"I think he played up to what he's been showing in the preseason and what he's capable of," Johnson said of Miller.

Later, in the 34th minute, Skillman scored on an assist from Blake Niemiec to put the Express up 4-0. They took that lead into the half.

In the first minute of the second half, Cincinnati State would answer with a goal by David Elwer. That goal was assited by Kyle Grothaus.

Following that, the game went scoreless until Skillman added his second goal at the 78:03 mark on an assist from Nate Seeman.

Skillman nearly got a hat trick late, but was denied.

Joshua Kleinow started in goal for the Express before being pulled in the 85th minute. Jeff Harding played the final five minutes in goal.

Owens (1-0) will travel to Jackson, MI to take on Jackson Community College Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.
