Ortega-Gonzalez Nets His First Goal Of The Year As Express Men Defeat Cuyahoga 5-3

Toledo, OH---Glenroy Miller scored two goals, while three others scored one apiece as the No. 15 Express men's soccer team defeated Cuyahoga Community College 5-3 at the Owens Soccer Complex today.

Cuyahoga's Richard Vanhorne put his team up 1-0 at the 9:36 mark of the first half, but Nickyle Webber answered back less than a minute later for the Express on an assist from Miller.

Miller then scored on an assist from Juavanie Cole at the 27:52 mark to put Owens up 2-1. Cuyahoga's Nikola Zegarac tied it up at the 34:10 mark, which is the way it headed into the half.

Owens came out strong and controlled the first 25 minutes of the second half to put the game away. David Ortega-Gonzalez scored his first goal of the season to put the Express up 3-2 at the 53:34 mark. The goal came when Chris Kervick booted a corner kick and Odaine Edwards headed it to Ortega-Gonzalez, who then scored.

Derrick Skillman gave the Express some breathing room at the 58:25 mark with a goal on an assist from Brandon Cruz. It was Skillman's third goal of the year, while it marked the first assist of the season for Cruz.

Later, at the 70:19 mark, Miller added his second goal on an assist from Webber to put Owens up 5-2. Vanhorne scored a late goal for the Challengers to make it a 5-3 final.

Joshua Kleinow started and played all 90 minutes in goal for the Express. He made four saves despite giving up a season high three goals.

The Express are now 5-1-1 (2-0 OCCAC) this year. This will take on Region XII foe Jackson Community College on Friday at 4 p.m. in a home matchup.

Notes

Prior to the game today, the Express men's soccer team entered the NJCAA D-I poll for the first time this season. They were ranked 15th.

Miller's assist was his first of the year, while he upped his team-high goal total to 11 this year. That currently puts him second in the nation in goals scored. He also increased his career goal total to 27.

Ortega-Gonzalez matched his goal total from all of last season with his one today, while Cole picked up his team-high fourth assist.

Webber improved his status as the team's second leading scorer with his fourth goal and fourth assist, which ties him for the team lead in assists with Cole.
