Williams Scores 22, No. 3 Owens Crushes Edison 108-61 In Record Tying 18th Straight Win

Toledo, Ohio---Courizma Williams (Hughes/Cincinnati, Ohio) and Demy Whitaker (Notre Dame Academy/Toledo, Ohio) torched Edison Community College for 41 combined points as the No. 3 Owens Community College women's basketball team cruised to a 108-61 win.

Edison scored the game's first basket, a lay-up by Markia Harris and led 4-2 with 18:28 left, but it was all Owens from there. Whitaker scored seven straight points to give Owens a 9-4 lead with 15:57 left, and Owens stretched the lead to 34 at halftime.

In the first half, Owens shot 22-for-41 from the field, including an 11-for-21 mark from 3-point range. Williams led the team at the break with 16 points off the bench, while Whitaker had 15 out of the starting lineup. The duo combined to shoot 12-for-19 overall from the field and 6-for-13 from 3-point range. Sophomore guard Zhana Randolph (Rochester/Rochester Hills, Mich.) also totaled eight first half points on an efficient 3-for-4 shooting, including a 2-for-3 finish from the 3-point line.

In the second half, Randolph came out on fire. She hit a pair of 3-pointers to bookend an 11-2 run to start the half. Her second 3-pointer gave Owens a 71-28 with 18:02 left. She ended up leading second half scorers for Owens with eight.

Overall, Williams finished with a game-high 22 points, along with seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal. She finished 8-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Aside from her, Whitaker totaled 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting (3-for-8 from 3-point range), while adding three assists and two rebounds.

Randolph added 16 points with her eight in each half. She also had five rebounds, three steals and one assist while finishing 5-for-7 from the field (4-for-5 from 3-point range).

Ashley Tunstall (Huber Heights Wayne/Dayton, Ohio) picked up her third straight double-double to open conference play. The sophomore forward had 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. She finished 5-for-9 from the field and had five offensive rebounds.

Sierra Harley (Africentric/Columbus, Ohio) was the fifth and final Owens player in double figures. She had 10 points off the bench on 5-for-9 shooting. She finished second on the team with six assists, while adding three steals in 22 minutes.

Freshman point guard Briana Williams (Stebbins/Dayton, Ohio) had seven points and a team-high nine assists. 

As a team, Owens shot 41-for-84 (48.8 percent) from the field and 15-for-32 (46.9 percent) from 3-point range. They made 11 of 16 from the foul line and out-rebounded Edison 52-41, while only turning the ball over 13 times. Defensively, they outscored Edison 35-7 in points off turnovers and they held a 44-30 advantage in points in the paint.

For Edison, Brooke Dunlevy tied Courizma Williams with a game-high 22 points, while Aaliyah Wise (19) and Harris (10) also scored in double figures. Those three players accounted for all but 10 of Edison's points.

In doing so, Owens (18-1, 3-0 OCCAC) picked up its school record tying 18th straight win. They tied the 2013-14 and 2009-10 teams, and they will go for the record next Wednesday on the road at Lakeland Community College at 5:30 p.m.

Edison falls to 0-13 overall and 0-3 in the OCCAC.

Notes

Randolph's 16 points marked a season-high for her and is two off her career-high she set on March 1 of last year. She has scored in double figures in five of her past seven games, and she also tied her season-high in rebounds with five.

Whitaker's scoring output was her fourth highest total of the season.

Briana Williams set a new season-high for assists in today's game (9). Her previous high was eight against Palm Beach State on Dec. 21.

Tunstall had her third straight double-double and her eighth of the season. She has double figures in rebounding in five of the team's past seven games.

Courizma Williams had season-highs in points, field goals made, 3-point field goals made and rebounds today. 

Harley had her 10th consecutive game with double digit scoring. She leads the team in scoring at 14.9 per game, and she only has two games this year in single digits.

Kyra Johnson (Stevenson/Livonia, Mich.) produced seven rebounds in 18 minutes, which gave her a new season-high. She also set a new season-high in offensive rebounds with four.
