No. 2 Owens Scores Game's First 27 Points, Routs Lakeland 98-36 For 25th Straight Win

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 2 Owens Community College women's basketball team raced out to a 27-0 lead en route to a 98-36 win over Lakeland Community College in the SHAC tonight.

With the win, Owens improves to 25-1 overall and 10-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC), and they improved a program record winning streak to 25.

Early on, Ashley Tunstall (Huber Heights Wayne/Dayton, Ohio) produced 10 points, two rebounds and one steal during the team's 27-0 run to open the game. 

Lakeland did not score until Tierra Martin's layup with 10:26 left in the half. Following that, Owens got back-to-back baskets from Imani Vickers (Mansfield Senior/Mansfield, Ohio) and Tatyana Reynolds (Rogers/Toledo, Ohio) for a 31-2 lead with just under nine minutes left.

Tunstall then scored four straight points to open up a 39-5 lead a few minutes later before Owens grabbed its largest lead of the half at 44-9 with 49 seconds left on a Sierra Harley (Africentric/Columbus, Ohio) layup.

Owens took a 45-10 lead into the break and continued their offensive output in the second half. Demy Whitaker (Notre Dame Academy/Toledo, Ohio) hit a pair of 3-pointers as Owens started the half on a 14-6 run.

Then, in the middle of the half, Owens opened up a 55 point lead with an 11-0 run that was capped by back-to-back layups from Reynolds and Courizma Williams (Hughes/Cincinnati, Ohio).

Down the stretch, Owens led by as many as 64 to maintain their nation best winning streak.

Tunstall had a game-high 18 points on 9-for-10 shooting. She added four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Harley chipped in 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while dishing out a game-high eight assists. 

Off the bench, Reynolds had 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Williams also added 12 points, and Whitaker totaled 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Briana Williams (Stebbins/Dayton, Ohio) returned to the lineup after a two-game absence and dished out four assists on zero turnovers.

Tyra Turk was the lone Lakeland player in double figures with 10.

As a team, Owens finished 41-for-79 (51.9 percent) from the field despite a 7-for-28 finish from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Lakeland was stifled by the Owens defense all night en route to a 13-for-50 (26 percent) finish overall and a 1-for-15 (6.7 percent) mark from long range.

Owens will hit the road for its final regular season road game on Saturday against Edison at 1 p.m.

Notes

With today's win, assistant coach Stephen Perry picked up his 200th win at Owens. Coincidentally, head coach Mike Llanas picked up his 250th win against Lakeland earlier this season.
