Seeding Announced For National Tourney, Owens To Square Off With Pima, Monroe

Toledo, Ohio---A little over a week ago, the Owens Community College women's soccer team booked its second straight trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I National Tournament with a 1-0 win over Schoolcraft College in the Region XII championship game.

Today, the team found out their seeding and opponents. Of the 12 teams in the tournament, Owens (13-4-2) is seeded No. 11, although the opening rounds consist of pool play. Therefore, Owens will open tournament play next Monday at 4 p.m. against No. 2 seed Monroe College (N.Y), who have a 15-1-0 overall record. On Tuesday, Owens will play No. 7 seed Pima Community College (AZ, 16-4-2) at 4 p.m.

Monroe College enters the tournament ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, while Pima is No. 10. Monroe's only loss this year was to No. 1 Iowa Western, they feature Carol Rodrigues, a sophomore forward with 20 goals and eight assists. and they have reeled off 14 straight wins heading into the tournament. Pima, meanwhile, has won three straight. They also feature a 20 goal, eight assist player in sophomore forward in Shannon Shields.

The winner of the each pool advances to the NJCAA Division I Final Four next weekend.

The tournament will be hosted by Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, Fla. Owens finished sixth in the nation in last year's tournament. This year's team is led in scoring by sophomore forward Haley Malaczewski (Central Catholic/Toledo, Ohio) with 11 goals and nine assists. Freshman forward Jordyn Wright (Riverdale/Forest, Ohio) has added six goals and 10 assists, and sophomore forward Kendyl Christian (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) has eight goals and one assist. She had the team's lone two goals in the Region XII semifinal win over Delta College. Additionally, freshman goalkeeper Chelsie Randolph (Start/Toledo, Ohio) has eight shutouts this year.
