Hemenway Serves Up Sweep For Owens Women's Volleyball

Toledo, Ohio---Amara Hemenway (Bellevue/Bellevue, Ohio) served the final 16 points of the second set against Edison Community College, en route to helping the Owens Community College women's volleyball team pick up a pair of straight set wins over Edison and St. Clair County Community College in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) today.

Match 1: Owens d. Edison 25-19, 25-8, 25-12

After Edison battled Owens in the first set, Hemenway closed out the second set and Owens started the third set on a 15-1 run to cruise past Edison in today's opener.

Owens won 31 of 32 points from late in the second set to the middle of the third set.

Ally Mikesell (St. Henry/St. Henry, Ohio) led the team with nine kills, while Macy Reigelsperger (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) added eight. Additionally, Erika Hartings (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) and Taylor Purcell (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) each had seven.

Jessica Cooper (Brandywine/Niles, Mich.) led the team with 15 assists, while Deanna Smith (Riverview/Riverview, Mich.) added 13. Reigeslperger (15) and Ciarra Wirick (Benjamin Logan/West Liberty, Ohio), who had 10, led the way in digs.

Hemenway had a team-high four aces - all in her 16 point rally.

Mikesell (7) and Kayla Siefker (Kalida/Ottawa, Ohio), who had four. led the team in blocks.

Match 2: Owens d. St. Clair County 25-23, 25-17, 25-22

In a closely contested matchup, Owens pulled out the straight set win thanks to the play of Mikesell and Cooper.

Mikesell produced eight kills on only one error, while adding a season-high 20 digs. Meanwhile, Cooper had a team-high 20 assists, along with eight digs and one kill.

Hartings led the team in kills with 10, while Hemenway (9), Reigelsperger (9), and Mikesell also contributed. Aside from Cooper's assists, Smith added 14. The team's lone service ace came from Reigelsperger.

Aside from Mikesell's 20 digs, Wirick (14), Smith (11) and LaVoy (10) also contributed in that category. Hartings and Hemenway each had three blocks to lead the team.

Looking Forward

Owens is now 10-4 overall and 3-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. Today's match against Edison was an OCCAC matchup.

The next matchup for Owens will be against an improved Lakeland Community College team at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
