Clay's Gyori, BGHS Product Smith Become First Two Members Of Owens Volleyball's 2015 Freshmen Class

Toledo, Ohio---The Owens Community College women's volleyball program has signed its first two recruits for next season in Clay's Brooke Gyori and Bowling Green's Tyanna Smith.

Brooke Gyori, the sister of former Owens volleyball player Kristen Gyori (2007-08), is a defensive specialist/libero. She will be a 2015 graduate of Clay High School in Oregon, Ohio, where she played under the tutelage of Dave Conely. As a senior, she was named Second Team All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) and Honorable Mention All-District. As a junior, she was Honorable Mention All-TRAC and Honorable Mention All-District.

Academically, the 5'4" Gyori is a three time Clay All-Academic selection, and she earned All-Ohio Academic honors last year. She is also a member of the softball and cross country teams at Clay.

Meanwhile, a little south of Clay, Bowling Green High School product, Smith, became the second student-athlete to sign with Owens this week. 

The 5'10" middle blocker, who was coached by Mandy Pasley at BGHS, was First Team All-Northern Lakes League, First Team All-District and the team MVP as a senior. She earned First Team All-NLL and Honorable Mention All-District honors as a junior.

These two players join a great sophomore class to be in Ally Mikesell (St. Henry/St. Henry, Ohio), Erika Hartings (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio), Amara Hemenway (Bellevue/Bellevue, Ohio), Macy Reigelsperger (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio), Deanna Smith (Riverview/Riverview, Mich.) and Taylor Purcell (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.)

Notes

The Owens volleyball team finished 34-11 overall this fall and 12-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play, which was good for a second place finish. Their season came to an end in the loser's bracket finals of the Region XII women's volleyball tournament. The team is coached by Sonny Lewis, who just completed his 14th season and picked up his 500th win along the way.
