No. 2 Owens VB Begins Postseason Journey Friday

DISTRICT F TOURNAMENT BRACKET

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 2 Owens Community College women's volleyball team will open Region XII District F tournament play this Friday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Cuyahoga Community College in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC).

Owens, which is 35-4 overall and recently completed its second straight 14-0 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) regular season, enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face a 17-14 Cuyahoga team in its opener. The other side of the four-team, double-elimination bracket features a 6 p.m. matchup on Friday between No. 2 seed Sinclair Community College (24-6) and No. 3 seed Edison Community College (11-14). Both matches will take place side-by-side on the main court in the SHAC.

The winner of each of those semifinal matchups will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the winner's bracket final. The losers will also meet at 11 a.m. with the loser's bracket final taking place at 1 p.m. The championship will then take place at 3 p.m. with the if necessary match occurring 30 minutes afterwards.

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The winner of the tournament advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament in Charleston, W.V. on Nov. 17-19. Owens is the defending Region XII District F tournament champion and went on to finish 3-1 and place ninth at last year's NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

TOUGH ROAD

This year, Owens will enter postseason play with an 11 game winning streak. They have also won 19 of the past 20 matches and 31 of the past 33. The team's four losses have come to No. 1 ranked and defending NJCAA Division II national champion Parkland College (46-2) on their home court Sept. 25, along with losses to NJCAA Division I teams Indian Hills Community College (35-6, ranked sixth in nation), Vincennes University (28-7) and Wallace State Community College - Hanceville (38-2).

On top of that, Owens has faced one of the nation's toughest schedules and done well. Their resume includes wins over No. 5 Catawba Valley Community College, No. 8 Kirkwood Community College, No. 10 Sauk Valley Community College, No. 11 McHenry County College, No. 14 Schoolcraft College, No. 15 Grand Rapids Community College, No. 16 Des Moines Area Community College and No. 19 Muskegon Community College. They have also defeated NJCAA Division I No. 18 Monroe College twice.
