No. 2 Owens Volleyball Routs Cuyahoga, Advances To Winner's Bracket Final Against Sinclair

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 2 Owens Community College women's volleyball team cruised past Cuyahoga Community College 25-17, 25-12, 25-6 in a Region XII District F winner's bracket semifinal at home in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) tonight.

With the win, Owens (36-4) advances to face Sinclair Community College at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the winner's bracket final at 11 a.m. The winner advances to the championship at 3 p.m.

In tonight's match, Tyanna Smith (Bowling Green/Bowling Green, Ohio) and Erika Angstmann (St. Mary's Memorial/St. Mary's, Ohio) combined for 20 kills with Smith recording a team-high 12. Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen/New Bremen, Ohio) chippped in five, while three others added four apiece.

Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.) and Carrigan Gray (Liberty-Benton/Findlay, Ohio) led the team in assists with 19 and 16, respectively, while Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) had a team-high 20 digs. Smith, who hit a team-high .588, also had a team-high eight blocks, and Heitkamp added four. 

Cuyahoga led Owens 7-5 early in the first set before Ashley Pleiman's (Fort Loramie/Fort Loramie, Ohio) serving led Owens on a 9-0 run. During that stretch, she recorded three aces, had one kill and made a great diving play for a dig. From there, Owens controlled the set, eventually pushing the lead to as many as 10 following a kill from Angstmann down the left side that made it 19-9. She then added another one of her five kills in the set to finish off the set.

The second set saw Cuyahoga take an early lead, as well, but Owens turned an 8-8 score into a big lead following 10 straight points. Angstmann closed the run with a kill down the left side, and Niki Polce (Huron/New Boston, Mich.) had an ace during the stretch.

Following three straight points from Cuyahoga, Owens reeled off five more points in a row. The run was capped by a kill from Smith, an ace from Tylutki and a solo block from Heitkamp. Cuyahoga then sent an attack out of bounds to end the set.

The third set was mostly destruction by Owens. They reeled off 17 straight points to open the set and led 21-1 at one point before Cuyahoga closed the set on a 5-4 run to trim the final deficit to 19. Tylutki served all 17 points during the initial run and had two aces during that stretch. Cuyahoga got their first point when one of her serves went long. In the set, Smith had eight kills, two blocks and an assist. 

Notes

Owens is now 3-0 against Cuyahoga this year, and they have won all nine sets played against them. Owens is also 2-0 and hasn't dropped a set this year against tomorrow's 11 a.m. opponent, Sinclair, who defeated Edison 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 in tonight's other winner's bracket semifinal. Meanwhile, Cuyahoga will face Edison in an 11 a.m. loser's bracket semifinal tomorrow.
