Weppernig's 68 Delivers Olivet Fall Golf Classic Title For Owens Men's Golf

Battle Creek, Mich.---Philippe Weppernig (Luzern, Switzerland) fired a second round 68 to lead the Owens Community College men's golf team to the Olivet College Fall Golf Classic championship today at Bedford Valley Country Club.

Weppernig's two-round 143 gave him a second place finish individually behind Calvin College's John Van Noord, who shot a second round 67 for a two-round total of 141.

Aside from Weppernig, the rest of the team combined for a second round 289, which gave them a two-round total of 588 - two shots ahead of Calvin College's 590. Wheaton College (606), Hope College (611) and Trinity Christian University (613) rounded out the top five teams.

Freshman Dominic DiGiacomo (Ocean City/Ocean City, N.J.) shot a 73 in each round to finish in a tie for fourth individually at 146, while Harrison Long's (Wilnecote/Tamworth, U.K.) 76-73-149 gave him a tie for 10th individually. Wyatt Spalding (Summerfield/Petersburg, Mich.) shot a 77-75-152 to tie for 21st, and Dru Hein (Jasper/Jasper, Ind.) shot a 75-80 for a 155 and a tie for 29th individually.

The 289 team score from Owens in the second round was one shot better than Calvin College's second round 290. No other team shot below 300 as a team in the second round.

In all, 16 teams and 90 individuals participated in this year's tournament, as Owens captured their second straight fall title at Olivet.

Today's title was the 30th for head coach Josh Williams in just over two years. The team won 17 last year and 12 the year before.

The next action for Owens will be Sept. 9 in the John P. Spiess Memorial Tournament at Wauseon's Iron Wood Golf Course.
