Owens Volleyball Impressive While Nearly Sweeping GRCC Invitational

Grand Rapids, Mich.---The No. 17 Owens Community College women's volleyball team swept three opponents and dropped a five set match over the past two days in the Grand Rapids Invitational.

With their 3-1 weekend, Owens improved to 19-8 overall heading into next weekend's home quad vs Jackson and Lincoln Land.

Match 1: Owens d. Oakland C.C. 28-26, 25-18, 25-22

Macy Reigelsperger (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) paced Owens with 16 kills on only four errors (.414 attack percentage), while Ally Mikesell (St. Henry/St. Henry, Ohio) added 10 kills on only three errors. 

Jessica Cooper (Brandywine/Niles, Mich.) led the team in assists with 20, while Deanna Smith (Riverview/Riverview, Mich.) added 18. Smith also had the team's only service ace. Ciarra Wirick (Benjamin Logan/West Liberty, Ohio) had a team-high 18 digs. Cooper added 12, while Mikesell and Aricka LaVoy (Eastwood/Pemberville, Ohio) each added eight.

Mikesell and Amara Hemenway (Bellevue/Bellevue, Ohio) had one solo block apiece, while Reigelsperger had a team-high six assisted blocks. Hemenway (3), Mikesell (2) and Taylor Purcell (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) (2) chipped in to help Reigelsperger in assisted blocks.

Oakland is now 10-6 overall this year.

Match 2: Owens d. St. Clair County C.C. 25-17, 25-13, 25-16

Reigelsperger, once again, smashed the competition efficiently with 11 kills on three errors for a .348 attack percentage. Mikesell (7), Erika Hartings (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) (6) and Hemenway (5) also helped in kills, while six players hit at least .300 or above - led by Purcell's .600 attack percentage.

Smith (17) and Cooper (15) led the team in assists, while Mikesell had two of the team's five service aces. Wirick (18) and Mikesell (15) led the team in digs, while Cooper (6) and LaVoy (5) helped out.

Reigelsperger and Mikesell each had a team-high three assisted blocks. Stephanie Kipp (Ida/Monroe, Mich.) and Hartings each added two.

Owens handed St. Clair County it's fifth straight loss as they fell to 9-9 overall this year. This was the second time that Owens defeated St. Clair County in straight sets this year.

Match 3: No. 19 Mott C.C. d. Owens 17-25, 25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 16-14

Owens struggled offensively as they only hit .138, but nearly came away with a victory in five sets. Reigelsperger (15) and Hartings (14) led the team in kills, while Kipp (8), Hemenway (6) and Mikesell (4) also helped out.

Cooper (25) and Smith (23) led the way in assists, while Smith (4) and Cooper (3) led the team in service aces. Wirick (27) and Mikesell (11) led the team in digs, while Smith (8), LaVoy (8) and Cooper (7) chipped in.

Mikesell had a team-high two solo blocks, while Reigelsperger had a team-high five assisted blocks. As a team, Owens had 16 assisted blocks. Aside from Reigelsperger, Hemenway (3), Mikesell (3), Hartings (2) and Kipp (2) chipped in.

After defeating Owens, Mott's record improved to 19-2 overall, and one of those losses was to No. 1 Parkland College.

Match 4: Owens d. Muskegon C.C. 25-13, 25-18, 25-20

In the first match following a tough loss, Owens bounced back in a strong way with a straight set win over Muskegon, led by Reigelsperger's 10 kills on a .474 attack percentage. Hartings added nine on a .333 attack percentage, while Mikesell and Hemenway each added seven kills.

Cooper (18) and Smith (12) led the way in assists, while Cooper (2) had a team-high in service aces.

Wirick and Mikesell each had a team-high 10 digs. LaVoy added seven. Hartings, Hemenway and Reigelsperger had the team's three solo blocks, while Kayla Siefker (Kalida/Ottawa, Ohio) and Mikesell each had a team-high three assisted blocks. Reigelsperger had two assisted blocks.

Muskegon is now 12-12 this year. With the win, Owens avenged a five set loss to Muskegon earlier this season.

Wrap Up

Owens (19-8) has won five of its past six. They will take on Lincoln Land C.C. and Jackson College this Saturday at home. Times are TBA and will be posted this week at OwensExpress.com on the volleyball schedule page.

Owens has only 12 matches left this year before postseason play begins Oct. 31. Six of those 12 matches are within the conference.

Reigelsperger eclipsed 300 kills this year with her weekend performance. Her former high school teammate, Hartings, is next closest with 293. Cooper broke the 500 assist mark this year with her weekend as she now has 522. Smith is next up with 466. Cooper also has a team-high 41 service aces.

Wirick has a team-high 407 digs, Hartings has a team-high 14 solo blocks and Reigelsperger has a team-high 76 assisted blocks. Reigelsperger has a team-high 87 total blocks.
