High School: 2001 Elmwood High School graduate, Bloomdale, Ohio, where he was First Team and Second Team All-Suburban Lakes League, as well as First Team All-District and First Team All-State.  Named the team's MVP as a senior, he also was honored as an All-"Blade" selection and holds the Elmwood High School record for batting average (.529).  Bateson also was a member of the basketball team.
