Parma, Ohio---It was just one of those days as the Owens Community College baseball team was shut out 12-0 over five innings by Vincennes University in today's Sub-Region XII tournament at Cuyahoga Community College's Western Campus.

Earlier in the day, Vincennes came out of the loser's bracket by defeated Lakeland Community College 8-5. Due to its win over Owens, the two teams will meet one more time tomorrow at 10 a.m. to decide a champion with the winner advancing to next week's Region XII tournament in Battle Creek, Mich.

Ardry Mercado (St. Raymond's High School for Boys/Manhattan, N.Y.) started for Owens, but lasted just one batter into the second inning.

Steve Georgic (Airport/Carleton, Mich.) relieved him and went the next two innings. He fared a little better, but Vincennes led 11-0 by the time he was finished.

Joe Szymanski (Maumee/Maumee, Ohio) pitched the final two innings. He was the best pitcher of the three today as the freshman allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out one.

Offensively, Owens produced five singles from five different players. The first one, a leadoff single by Jake Norbut (Grove City/Grove City, Ohio) in the third, was erased on a 5-4-3 double play on the next pitch.

In the fourth, Casey Gose (Genoa/Genoa, Ohio) also produced a leadoff single, but he was erased trying to stretch it into a double. Charlie Sipe (Northrop/Fort Wayne, Ind.) also singled in the inning, but was left stranded.

Jake Weshalek (Shrine Catholic/Royal Oak, Mich.) and Zach Coffield (Eastwood/Bowling Green, Ohio) got back-to-back singles in the fifth for Owens, but were also stranded to end the game.

Mercado (2-3) took the loss for Owens. He allowed three hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks over one plus inning. Georgic allowed four hits and five runs over his two innings.

Owens fell to 19-23 on the year with the loss. They will have a second chance at win No. 20 tomorrow with the season and a championship on the line.
