2014-15: Groves had a breakout freshman campaign while averaging 11.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 blocks and nearly one steal per game. On Nov. 25 against Washtenaw, he scored a season-high 29 points and pulled down a single game program record 28 rebounds. For that game, he earned OCCAC and NJCAA player of the week honors. Overall, he scored in double figures 16 times and had 10 or more rebounds 13 times.

Groves totaled 336 points, 264 rebounds, 61 assists, 39 blocks and 27 steals in 29 games, while making 11 starts. He shot 53.8 percent from the field, 33.9 percent from 3-point range and 70.8 percent from the foul line.

In OCCAC play, Groves averaged 10.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 blocks per game en route to Honorable Mention All-OCCAC honors. In the team's two postseason games, he averaged 19 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals and two blocks per game. In OCCAC play, he finished ninth in rebounding.

Prior to Owens: Groves, who was the first member of the 2014-15 incoming class, attended Quakerdale Prep School in New Providence, Iowa last year, where he averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks per game.

At Thurgood Marshall, Groves participated in the District 15 All-Star game with his former Thurgood Marshall and current Owens teammate Edmond Early Jr. That duo helped Thurgood Marshall become the No. 1 ranked team in Ohio, regardless of class, for their entire senior year until the state tournament. Prior to the tournament, the team's only loss was to the No. 1 team in the USA Today Top 25 poll, Findlay Prep. They finished the season 23-2 and, at one point, were ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Top 25 poll nationally.

Personal: Darren is the son of James Groves and Angela Tyner. He has three siblings, Frank, Rashawd and Jalla.
