Perrysburg, OH - The Owens Express men's soccer team stretched their winning streak to four with a pair of victories this weekend over Ancilla College on Saturday and Muskegon Community College on Sunday.
In a 2-0 win over Muskegon, Owens seized control of the game at the 70:31 mark when Travis Turner (Springfield/Holland, Ohio) kicked a deflected ball to the right of Muskegon's goalie and into the net to break a scoreless game. David Ortega-Gonzalez (Nazaret Oporto/Madrid, Spain) had thrown the ball in from the sideline, a Muskegon defender headed the ball back toward the middle of the action and Turner seized the opportunity to make it 1-0.
Then, after entering the game for the first time shortly after the 60th minute, Novak Vuk Janicic (Elektro Technicka Skola/Belgrade, Serbia) iced the game with a goal off a free kick in the 88th minute on an assist from Nickyle Webber (Cornwall College/Trelawny, Jamaica).
Jake Olman (Maumee/Maumee, Ohio) started in goal for the Express and stopped three shots on goal.
In a 4-2 win over Ancilla College, Webber and Vuk Janicic led the Express. After Ancilla took a 1-0 lead at the 21:31 mark, Vuk Janicic made a nice pass up field to Webber, who lofted the ball over Ancilla''s goalie and into the net at the 31:39 mark to tie the match.
Tied at halftime, the match swung in the favor of Owens in the second half thanks to a strong breeze. Kyle Whitmore (Start/Toledo, Ohio), Vuk Janicic and Webber scored three goals for the Express at the 57:17, 62:35 and 77:49 marks to put Owens up 4-1. Ancilla answered with a late goal at the 89:44 mark, but it wasn't enough.
Webber finished with two goals and one assist, while Vuk Janicic finished with one goal and one assist. Turner added an assist, too. Olman started in goal for Owens and stopped seven shots on goal, while also assisting on the final goal for Owens.
The weekend meant revenge for the Express as Ancilla had defeated the Express 2-1 at home on Sept. 3 and Muskegon had defeated the Express 2-0 on Sept. 4.
Owens (6-3, 5-3 Region XII) will take on Lakeland Community College Wednesday at home beginning at 4 p.m.
