Owens Softball, Volleyball Programs Continue Academic Excellence, Earn National Honors

By Nicholas Huenefeld/Owens Sports Information

Toledo, Ohio---The Owens Community College women's volleyball and softball teams have each earned honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Both teams achieved at least a 3.0 team GPA for the 2014-15 year and were awarded with NJCAA All-Academic team honors. The softball program had the highest GPA of any sport at Owens with a 3.34, while the women's volleyball team had a 3.05.

It marks the third straight year each team has achieved the honor. Softball recorded a 3.31 GPA in 2012-13 and a 3.09 GPA in 2013-14, while volleyball recorded a 3.19 GPA in each of the past two years.

Earlier this summer, Owens softball players Lexi Williams (Home School/Swanton, Ohio), Haley Kreger (Bedford/Temperance, Mich.) and Lesley Ducat (Evergreen, Ohio), as well as volleyball player Aricka LaVoy (Eastwood/Pemberville, Ohio), earned individual NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete awards, which were previously known as Academic All-Americans.

Both teams are primed to continue their success in the classroom, on the court and in the field next year. For more information on each program, visit www.owensexpress.com.

Notes

The softball team's 3.34 GPA was also the highest GPA among any sport in the entire Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC).

In the OCCAC, Owens had two of the conference's four teams to achieve at least a 3.0 GPA. Sinclair Community College's women's volleyball team (3.09 GPA) and Lorain County Community College's women's volleyball team (3.13 GPA) were the other two.

The NJCAA honored 591 teams across the nation for achieving at least a 3.0 GPA, while 25 teams were awarded NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors for achieving the highest GPA in the nation in their respective sport. For a full list of teams honored, visit here
