Owens Breaks the Spell, Win 77-56 Over Edison

By Chris Schmidbauer, Sports Information Director

After dropping two straight games after the start of 2018, the Owens Women's Basketball team got back on the right track on Wednesday night, taking down the Edison Chargers 77-56 in an OCCAC contest.

The Express wrapped up a successful week at the ICC Holiday Classic in late December, finishing the calendar year at 13-2. However the start of the new year was tough sledding for the Express. They lost to unranked Vincennes (80-59) and Sinclair (67-59) in back to back games.

The team's midweek tilt was a different story. Essence Cowan, Dai'Shona Polk and Da'Vina Shelton all finished the game in double figures in scoring to help the Express to their 21 point win.

Cowan was the offensive catalyst in the first half. The sophomore was red hot from the field, shooting 6-11 in the first half and 4-8 from beyond the arc for 17 total point heading into the break. The second half belonged to Polk. Shooting just 1-4 from the field in the first half, the freshman, from Canton, OH, was 7-10 in the second half, to finish with 18 point and she also added 11 caroms to her stat line. It is her fourth double-double for the season.

Fellow freshman Da'Vina Shelton finished with 15 points on 6-13 shooting for the game. She has been in double figures for scoring for all but three contests for the season for Owens.

After struggling from the field during their two game skid, Owens shot much better from the field against the Chargers. The Express shot just 29% in both losses, but they shot 47.7% on the night.

The Express are now 14-4 overall for the season and are 4-1 in the OCCAC, trailing Sinclair by a game in the conference standings.

Owens will next be in action this Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM when they welcome in Columbus State (9-6 overall, 4-2 OCCAC). It will be the team's first home game since December 2nd.
