No. 2 Owens cruises past Lakeland, sets up showdown with Terra State for OCCAC crown

TOLEDO, Ohio --- The No. 2 Owens Community College volleyball team (24-6, 10-1) cruised past Lakeland Community College 25-7, 25-8, 25-15 in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) last night.

The win, which came on Pack the SHAC night in front of a large crowd, sets up a Friday night showdown at National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II No. 7 Terra State (29-3, 10-0) for a share of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) regular season championship.

The Titans, who have won 28 of their past 29 matches, produced a hard-fought 29-27, 28-26, 25-21 win over Owens on Sept. 1. Meanwhile, Owens has won 10 straight heading into the matchup, which serves as the regular season finale for the Express.

A balanced effort led Owens in the win over Lakeland. Maddie White, the reigning OCCAC player of the week, led the team with nine kills, while McKenna Babcock and Ashley Scott notched eight apiece. Sydnie Meinke (7) and Alexis Sarvo (6) also combined for 13 as the Red and White hit .374 as a team.

Emily Fallis led the Express with 20 assists while five others, including Karly Bekier, notched at least two apiece. Taylor Momany had five of the team's 12 aces. White also contributed a team-best seven digs, and Sydney Alford chipped in six.

Notes

With a win on Friday, Owens can clinch a share of the program's 19th OCCAC championship since 1998. Among the 18 previously won, 16 have been outright - including the past five in a row. Terra State, which resurrected the program in 2019 after a long absence, won its lone OCCAC championship in 1999.

With its win on Wednesday, Owens has now produced at least one 10-match winning streak every season since 2014.
